Bullied, bored and burnt out

Bullied, bored and burnt out

It makes me shudder to recall the memories, but if I hadn't experienced some of the pretty horrendous things that happened during my career, I wouldn’t be writing this newsletter today.

I’ve been bullied, bored and burnt out.

The first time I worked with a toxic boss, I didn’t even realise what was happening. I was in my 20s and starting my career at a PR agency.

I assumed my boss’s behaviour was all my fault…

...I must’ve been doing something wrong.

…I wasn’t good enough for the role.

…I should be working harder, and I’m not learning fast enough.

I kept my head down for a bit and woke each morning with a sense of dread about going into the office.

I used to tell friends about it over a bottle of wine on a Friday night. They all had moans of their own, so we collectively guessed it was just what happened when you start work.

I bet if you think back across your career, you can name moments when you doubted or criticised yourself too.

But here’s the thing - the issue wasn’t with you at all.?

I wish I could wave a magic wand and get rid of all the toxicity that exists in workplaces.

Instead, I figured out a way to support professionals and enable them to see a path beyond all the corporate bullsh*t that serves no purpose.

I realised I could support them in a different way. Rather than providing jobs for candidates, I could empower them to find their own jobs.

So in 2020, I decided to shift my focus from recruiting to coaching, and I’ve been amazed by the results my clients have achieved over the past three years.

Many new clients approach me because they’ve lost their way. Their career isn’t fulfilling, and they know there must be something better for them.

But they wonder if it’s safer to stay in their lane.

The thing is, they can’t stop wondering, ‘what if.’ They?want more from life?but need the confidence boost to strive for it.

Coaching isn’t an easy option. We tackle lots of issues head-on, and it can get very emotional.

But when you get to the root of something that’s been buried (for me, the feelings I experienced after being bullied came knocking every time I applied for a new role), you CAN overcome it.

I offer reflective coaching with practical job consultancy. It’s candid, solution-focused and gets you unstuck and ready for your next move. Whatever you decide that to be.

You don’t need to suffer in silence.?If anything here resonates with you, please get in touch.

Great read Vicki. I spent two years working for an awfully toxic manager, looking back I wonder why it took me 23 months before I realised I needed to leave. Handing my notice in was one of the most satisfying and cathartic moments of my life.
