Bulletproof Your Design Business
Most businesses will be experiencing an uncomfortable amount of projects put on hold right now. Whether or not this is the case for you, the following framework will help you bulletproof your design business.
First, ask yourself…
What is this situation really telling you?
When projects are put on hold there’s no secret to what that means. It means something has taken higher priority. Attention has shifted. Instead of seeing this as a loss, treat this as a signal…
In this situation your primary goal is to uncover what's REALLY going on. Don’t guess, don’t assume. The moment your client puts your project on hold is the perfect opportunity to schedule a call with them. Book the call, share empathy, ask questions and listen.
At a basic level, you need to discover:
- What’s their current situation?
- What’s the most pressing matter for them right now?
- What challenges are they up against?
- What’s their desired outcome?
Think you can help them? Make an offer.
Perhaps this sounds too simple or idealistic. The truth is… it is that simple. It’s us who complicates things. If you have a good relationship with your clients and they trust you to stand by them and get the job done that’s all it takes.
But let’s be realistic... the scope of work might be outside of what you're used to doing. Of course it might! The whole market situation is entirely unique. But that's fine because no one realistically expects you to have all the answers on day one. Often it’s about acquiring the missing information on the way…
The key is to believe in your ability to figure it out.
REMEMBER: People invest in you because they believe that they’re better off with you in their corner. Together you can figure it out.
