The Bulldog's Guide to Relaxation: Lessons from Archie
Ah, the holiday. A time to leave your worries behind, lie on the beach, get oneself the well deserved beer, and achieve a state of relaxation that only exists in Instagram posts. Currently, I’m on holiday with my lovely wife and our English Bulldog, Archie. Spoiler alert: Archie is the only one who’s truly relaxing. As for me? My head is a spinning vortex of unfinished tasks, work worries, and client crises. But maybe—just maybe—Archie has some wisdom to impart.
Lesson 1: Master the Art of Napping
Archie’s first lesson is simple: nap like you mean it. This dog can fall asleep anywhere—beach, couch, your favorite chair, you name it. Meanwhile, I’m lying on a sun lounger, mentally drafting emails and wondering if I remembered to respond to that urgent client request. If only I could channel Archie’s ability to conk out at the drop of a hat, instead of contemplating life’s great mysteries like, “Why did I agree to that impossible deadline?”
Lesson 2: Live in the Moment
Archie doesn’t worry about tomorrow’s vet appointment or yesterday’s bone. He’s here, now, snoring contentedly on the sand. I, on the other hand, am mentally compiling a to-do list that’s longer than War and Peace. Take a cue from Archie: focus on the present. Smell the salty air, feel the warm sun, and, for the love of all that is holy, stop thinking about that email you forgot to send to the client who needs it “ASAP.”
Lesson 3: Enjoy the Simple Pleasures
For Archie, life’s greatest joys are simple: a good belly rub, a tasty treat, a nice spot to nap. Me? I’m busy overanalyzing every decision, from my choice of beachwear to my cocktail order. Next time, I’ll take a page from Archie’s book. Find joy in the little things—a refreshing dip in the sea, the taste of a perfectly mixed pi?a colada, the feel of the sand between my toes. And if all else fails, find a human to scratch my belly. (Just kidding. Sort of.)

Lesson 4: Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff
Archie has never met a worry he couldn’t sleep through. Meanwhile, I’m sweating the small stuff like a marathon runner in a sauna. Did I turn off the coffee maker? Will the plants revolt while I’m gone? Is the bartender judging my drink choice? Archie’s advice: who cares? The coffee maker isn’t going anywhere, the plants will survive, and the bartender probably has bigger concerns than my cocktail preferences.
Lesson 5: Be Yourself, Unapologetically
Archie is unapologetically himself. Drooling? Check. Snoring? Check. Rolling in the sand with wild abandon? Double check. Me? I’m too busy worrying about what others think to let loose. This holiday, I’ll channel my inner Archie. I’ll embrace my quirks, my worries, and my incessant need to overthink. Because if a bulldog can be loved for his drooling and snoring, surely I can be loved for my overactive mind.
The Final Takeaway
In conclusion, the path to true relaxation might just be paved with bulldog wisdom. So, let’s raise a glass to Archie—the Zen master of napping, living in the moment, enjoying simple pleasures, not sweating the small stuff, and being unapologetically himself. May we all learn a thing or two from our furry friends and, just maybe, find a little peace on our holiday.
Here’s to mastering the art of relaxation, one belly rub at a time. Cheers!
