Building Your Personal Brand

Building Your Personal Brand

What do you want to be known for?

What do you want people to think when they hear your name?

These are questions to ask yourself when it comes to building your Personal Brand.

A personal brand is KEY to your goals and impact, no matter where you are in your career. If you are starting out, if you a top-level Executive at a company, or if you are an Entrepreneur/Small Business Owner.

Your Personal Brand is what makes you STAND OUT. What makes people want to work with you, have you on their project, hire you, be around you. It is what helps YOU determine what is right, or not right for you. It is what attracts the RIGHT kind of people and opportunities to you because they are aligned to who you are and what you want.

The struggle I see with so many leaders is they are UNCLEAR of who they are-as a person, and as a leader.

What happens when we don't have a Personal Brand:

X We don't know what we value and what matters to use=feeling misaligned and unhappy

X We don't know what we stand for, what matters to us, what we want to be known for=we are missing our purpose

X We don't STAND OUT to others=we miss out on opportunities

X We attract in the WRONG kind of people, opportunities, business

X We are always trying to be like SOMEONE else (lead like someone else, talk like someone else, show up like someone else) because we aren't clear on WHO WE ARE

Building your personal brand is what can serve as a guide and compass to what you do, what you pursue, and how others will THINK of you.

Ways To Build Your Personal Brand

  1. Get Clear On What you VALUE

I'm always amazing how FEW people know their own values and actually put those values into ACTION. What you value should serve as the lens through which you make decisions.

Your values serve as the lens through which you make decisions.

If you haven't done this yet, identify your TOP 5 values. (You can even do a quick google search for a bunch of words like-integrity, health, wellbeing, respect, etc.) and identify your top values.

Take it a step further by identifying:

  • What would that value look like in ACTION in my life?

2. Ask Yourself:

  • What do I want to be known for?

What do you want people to think of when they think of you? Reliable? Confident? Assertive? Easy-going?

What type of energy do you want to put out there for other people?

3. If you thought of yourself as a Brand (think like Starbucks, Target, Nike, etc.), what would the WORDS be that would describe you?

Companies spend TONS of money on building their brand because it makes people think of them and feel a certain way. What words would describe your brand?

4. Get Feedback

If you're struggling with your own brand and how others perceive you, you can even build up the courage to ask those you trust in your network, what words come to mind when they think of you. Ask yourself:

  • Does this feel aligned to who I am and how I want to be perceived?

Sometimes when we are vulnerable, others help to hold up a mirror for us to see ourselves.

5. Come up with a Plan

Once you've done the work to figure out your own Personal Brand (using your values, the words you came up with, and your feedback), come up with a plan for how you will build your Personal Brand.

  • How can you put this into action?
  • What meetings/opportunities do you have coming up that you can really demonstrate these qualities?
  • What things do you need to do to really build this brand? (ex. if you identify "Creative" as part of your brand, what can you do to start doing more creative things? If you identify "organized" as a part of your brand, what do you need to do to create more of that?)
  • What situations can you demonstrate your own personal brand?

Building your own personal brand contributes to your presence, your confidence, your goals, and your overall growth.

Great article Julie! It made me stop and think about refreshing some of the outdated and older pieces from my existing “brand”. Thank you!
