Building Your Network for Success

Welcome back to Business and Award Insights with me Philip Oladejo.

In today's newsletter, we'd be talking about networking and how it can transform your career and business.

Being someone who has been in the system of networking, I like to define networking as an art of building relationships.

Networking is more than just exchanging business cards or connecting on social media, it's about building meaningful connections that can open doors to opportunities you never imagined.

Types of Networks?

There are various types of networks and each serves a unique purpose. From the below list, you can ask yourself "which of these networks do I have".

1. Professional Networks: These networks are related to your career or industry. They include colleagues, peers, mentors, and industry professionals.

2. Social Networks: Your social network comprises friends, family, and acquaintances. While these connections might not always directly relate to your career, they can offer support and referrals.

3. Online Networks: Social media platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter, and Facebook provide opportunities for online networking. They allow you to connect with professionals globally, share your expertise, and engage in industry-specific discussions.

4. Community Networks: Your local community or neighbourhood can be a valuable network. Community involvement not only benefits your personal life but also provides opportunities for local business connections.

Building a Strong Network

Now that we've identified the different types of networks, how can you build a robust and effective network?

  1. Define Your Goals: Start by defining your networking goals. What do you hope to achieve through networking? Are you looking for career opportunities, seeking mentorship, or expanding your client base? Clarifying your objectives will guide your networking efforts.
  2. Be Genuine: Authenticity is key to successful networking. People are more likely to connect with and help those who are sincere and genuine in their interactions. Be yourself, and don't try to be someone you're not.
  3. Identify Your Target Audience: Determine the individuals or groups you want to connect with. Are they professionals in your industry, potential clients, or mentors? Tailor your networking efforts to reach your target audience effectively.
  4. Attend Networking Events: Professional conferences, seminars, workshops, and industry-specific events are excellent opportunities to expand your network. Be proactive in participating in discussions and approaching new contacts.
  5. Utilize Online Platforms: Leverage online networking platforms like LinkedIn to connect with professionals worldwide. Ensure your profile is complete, professional, and highlights your skills and achievements.
  6. Give Before You Receive: Networking is a two-way street. Offer assistance, share valuable insights, and provide support to your connections. The more you give, the more likely others will reciprocate.
  7. Follow-up: After making initial connections, follow up with your contacts. Send a personalized message or email expressing your interest in maintaining the connection.

There you have it, how to build a network for success. I hope you apply these tips when next you go for your networking event.

Networks are vitally important, for many different reasons. My primary reason for the importance is the support structure that a strong network provides. We can achieve much more when supported by likeminded individuals and not acting from a silo position. Humans are generally programmed to be interactive, such interaction being critical to our success in our personal and professional lives. I have, and am grateful to a dynamic and ever growing “hybrid” network, made up of a mix of all four of the structures described in your fantastic article, and I feel that the mix works very well dependent upon the situation, be it personal or professional, or a cross over between the two. Thanks for sharing Philip. A great read on a Saturday evening.

Thanks very much for today's teaching about networks. Yes, we all need a network if we want to fulfill our dreams. This teaching was helpful.
