Building Your Legal Brand in a Digital World

Building Your Legal Brand in a Digital World

During the NAPABA 2024 Convention, I had the privilege of hosting a CLE with Don Liu, Raoul Shaw, and Ralph Tsong. Our goal was to give lawyers a blueprint for telling their stories online. The mental model is that storytelling builds relationships, which result in referrals that lead to business.

Here are some key takeaways:

  1. Short videos are the best medium for digital storytelling. Social platforms are designed to maximize "time on platform" and the most engaging content delivery medium is short videos with captions. It's the closest way we have to talking to someone directly online. Ivan Fong's Minnesota story has been watched for 36+ hours by 12,000 people.
  2. Relationship building happens before, during, and after the event. We marketed the panel with short videos, connected with people in-person, and are now using the shorts to engage with you post-NAPABA. You can click on Don, Ralph, or Raoul to listen to their stories.
  3. Leverage your community for distribution. Maximize your content's reach and engagement by leveraging your community networks. Algorithms boost your post based on likes, comments, and shares. If people engage with your content, your 2nd and 3rd degree networks will see it. Here's an announcement from MNAPABA about how they're doing this with Homi.
  4. Know your story. Our Q&A started off with loads of audience questions about how and when to post on social media. Don picked up the mic and said a few words that changed the tenor of the conversation. "What is your story? Can you tell it before this elevator reaches the 20th floor? Figure this out before worrying about views and clicks."
  5. Find your voice. Telling your story takes practice, which requires giving yourself permission to speak. I asked Elaine Lin Herring, author of Unlearning Silence, to record a video that might inspire Asian American attorneys to tell theirs. Here's the video.

Great insights from the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association event! I'm curious, what digital strategies do you think are most effective for lawyers looking to establish their brand? On a different note, would you be interested in investing in real estate? If yes, please feel free to connect!

Very helpful! Most lawyers don't get much training on brand-building or social media, but this is so important nowadays. You can be an amazing attorney, but you cannot help your potential clients if they don't know about you!
