An insidious function of racism at work is the simultaneous minimization *and* theft of ideas and impact from Black and brown employees, who even with documented strong performance, already face steeper hills to climb for promotion, bonuses, etc. The theft of proper credit is sadly part of the metanarrative of Black and brown experience in America, so it should not be a surprise it would continue at work. However, there are some clear actions we can take to address this...
Leaders: providing proper credit/recognition/citation is a critical element of an inclusive and equitable workplace. Make sure to amplify the actual people doing the work. If you're feeling extra bold, sponsor historically marginalized talent and affirm their effort.
Peers/aspirational allies: as hard as it may be, resist the spotlight and point it at those doing the work - the stage is big enough for all of us.
Historically marginalized employees: There is no shame in advocating for yourself and speaking factually to your impact for the sake of your career. Keep going.
