As we near the end of another academic year (in the UK) it has given thought to supporting the Next Generation of talent looking to start their careers, but, more importantly advice on how to build and accelerate their career growth.
There are 4 core principles that I always talk to our Early Careers population @Vertiv about, if people follow these they do see exceptional results and it certainly accelerates their career, (They are also built into our EMEA Vertiv Next Generation Early Careers Program) they are as follows…..
- Own it, the first important rule when talking about ‘your career’ is that no one will own this for you, it has to be you that owns it. There are many courses that will help you on the next two steps but if you don’t own the process, the output and stayed focused it won’t be as successful as if you do.
- Define it, this is probably the hardest part for anyone. What do I actually want to do in the future? This doesn’t have to be the role you want to retire in, it could be short term (12 – 18 months) or medium term (4 – 5 years) the choice is yours. The critical element here is to define where you want to be within a certain time parameter, also making sure that it is realistic. Answering the question ‘Who Am I?’ may also help with this stage, look at personal values, work motivators and drivers, any job you aim for has to align with these otherwise you won’t be fully engaged and therefore likely to fail.
- Set Objectives, as you look at your ‘future self’ be critical and set some clear objectives to achieve across that time period. One trick here is to look at the future job online and identify what skills, knowledge or competencies you need to develop in order to gain this position. Would always recommend that you make these SMART Objectives (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-Bound) as this will then help you with the final point.
- Drive it, Once you have mapped out the last 2 points then it is important that you drive yourself to achieve the objectives. Your personal drive is the first, and biggest, element of success here but there is often a forgotten element which is simple…. share this with your boss and company. Part of your objectives could be to reach the next level in your current organisation, if this is the case by sharing it will show your commitment and they may even be able to give you some advice, support or even a mentor.
Building your career doesn’t stop here though, like most things in life this is a cycle and obstacles will be thrown your way, barriers will be put up, opportunities may not present themselves but it is important that you continually review your plan to stay focused and engaged. You can sit back and wait for an organisation to work with you on a development plan, send you on some courses and help with your development but if you really want to accelerate your career then reflect back to point 1 above…. You own your career, therefore invest in your thinking, planning and set yourself some objectives to get it moving, don’t wait for someone else to start this process for you.
