Building a Winning Team

We all want to win but getting to that win isn’t easy. We know what it takes on paper: planning, coordination, trial and error…but there’s obviously more to it. So, how can you make a team a world champion? How do you take your company to greatness??

I think it’s really all about core mission and values. Of course, every company has a mission and a set of values, but it’s not always the case that these truly drive what those companies do.?

At One Call, we consistently speak to and act on our mission and values. This was especially the case at One Call’s recent sales conference. After a two-year postponement due to the pandemic, we finally gathered in-person – allowing us to forge new relationships, while strengthening our team.

For us, our mission of getting people the care they need, when they need it, provides the motivation for coming to work, for continually improving, and for connecting with all our stakeholders to ensure great outcomes. Our values very simply state the expectations we have of each other. The values are simple, but powerful. We?THINK BIG,?GO FAST,?DELIVER AWE, and?WIN TOGETHER. This defines how we do what we do.

The sales conference highlighted how deeply One Call adheres to and exudes our core mission and values in everything we do. That is what makes us a winning team. Although every team and company are different, staying true to your mission and values is the most effective way to keep up momentum and motivation, and to realize that team win.?

We wanted everyone to leave the sales conference with a strong understanding of how our mission and values guide and shape our interactions with clients and each other. Here’s how we embedded One Call’s mission and values in all our events and programming during our time together at the sales conference.?

Have ONE Mission.

When you have too many missions, it will steer you off track and ultimately hinder you (and your team) from achieving your goal. This quote from President James A. Garfield says it better than I ever could:

At One Call, our mission has been clear since day 1: We get injured workers the care they need, when they need it. Our mission permeates every single meeting, every email we write and every case we manage. This singular mission keeps us laser-focused and united. We repeated our mission throughout the sale conference to really drive our purpose home.?

Think Big.

You can’t win by yourself, and you can’t win when you think small. That’s why you need to think big to reach that win.??

What does it really mean to think big? It means thinking beyond yourself and what you know. It means expanding your network, learning new approaches and considering how to make the impossible possible.

The sales conference wasn’t meant to be for the sales team by the sales team. We invited executives from across the One Call network and even leaders outside of One Call to inspire and share new ways of thinking.?

Go Fast.

It is certainly possible to go too fast, but you can and should go fast while making calculated, strategic moves. Going fast means capitalizing on the right opportunity at the right time, since if you won’t someone else will.

For the One Call sales team, we emphasized the importance of taking assertive action. That’s the best way to making the sale and getting that win.?

Deliver Awe.

On our final night at the sales conference, we celebrated outstanding sales performers who continually deliver awe to their clients and inspire their teams to achieve more. We recognize the challenges our sales team faced in the socially distant world we have been living in and how sales leaders had to adapt and pivot when they can no longer meet clients regularly face-to-face. The past two years have been some of the most challenging for our industry, yet we continue to see high achieving team members exceed their goals and deliver awe.

Win Together.

To win together, you have to learn how to work together. That may seem obvious, but after two-years of remote work during the pandemic – most of the One Call sales team hadn’t physically worked together.?

On the last day of the conference, we held a community service event for?Hunger Fight, a non-profit that shares our Jacksonville home and works to end hunger and illiteracy for children in North Florida. We formed teams and we packaged more than 20,000 meals. This was a huge win for the One Call team. We worked together and we won together.

As we wrapped the sales conference, we polled the attendees in the room and asked: Do you think we are winning together? 100% said yes.?

My hope was our team would leave the sales conference re-energized by the programming and comradery and return to their markets ready to embody One Call’s mission and values. I am proud to say that’s exactly what has happened in the month since the sales conference concluded. We are stronger than ever, and we are committed.?

I hope some of the learnings from One Call’s sales conference and our deep commitment to our mission and values inspire you to either re-affirm or even re-think your company’s mission and values. Let's go Win Together!

OneCall's value statement of THINK BIG,?GO FAST,?DELIVER AWE, and?WIN TOGETHER is by far the most impressive and widely accepted at all levels of any organizational values that I have been a part of in my 25+ year career. Thanks Tom for building a great and supportive team.
