Building Watershed and Climate Resilience across North America in Partnership with Community-Based Organizations

@Global Water Challenge (GWC) salutes the work of the @Ohio River Foundation (ORF), whose mission is to protect and improve the water quality and ecology of the Ohio River and all waters in its 14-state watershed. ORF works towards these goals through environmental education and conservation activities that serve to inspire environmental stewardship and bolster climate change resiliency for native species, habitats and communities. With support from our Cargill Currents North America partnership, ORF is improving watershed health and quality for the Ohio River watershed, which is impacted by poor water quality due to pollution from urban runoff, agriculture, sedimentation and industrial pollution.

Through Cargill Currents North America, ORF is rehabilitating riparian habitats through the planting of native species along the Twin Creek tributary, reducing riverbank erosion and pollution resulting from sediment. To date through this project, the Ohio River Foundation has planted 21,425 native trees and shrubs along nearly six miles of riverbank, protecting the Ohio River watershed from further erosion and creating habitats for local biodiversity, building a more climate-resilient habitat for a changing climate.

With support from the Cargill Currents North America program, GWC is collaborating with leading organizations across the U.S. to implement high-impact projects that improve watershed health and water security, through activities such as invasive species removal, promotion of regenerative agriculture, strengthening water supply systems, wetland restoration and more. The program is building climate and community resilience while also promoting economic development.

Follow along over the next few months as we spotlight our @Cargill Currents North America partners.
