Fostering Excellence in Leadership: Cultivating Value Centered Practices
As the pace of change in work and life (including pharmacy & healthcare) continues to change, the effectiveness of our teams and the quality of our work environments are just as critical as the medications, products and services we provide. This edition focuses on key insights for leaders and coaches, exploring how fostering an exceptional workplace can enhance outcomes in patient care, workplace wellbeing and team performance.
The Importance of a Thriving Workplace
Creating a workplace that attracts and retains high performing staff is essential for driving innovation and delivering optimal service and superior patient care. Research consistently shows that organisations with engaged employees outperform their competitors. When team members feel heard, valued, and respected, they are motivated to excel, leading to increased customer satisfaction and overall business success.
As leaders, a key responsibility is to cultivate an environment of inclusion and respect. High turnover, low morale, and disengagement can stem from neglecting these factors. To counteract this, consider implementing the following strategies:
1. Acknowledge Contributions: Regularly recognise and celebrate team achievements, no matter how small.
2. Empower Employees: Allow team members to take ownership of their roles, fostering a sense of responsibility and pride in their work.
3. Build a Positive Reputation: Strive to be known as a 'great place to work.' This not only attracts talent but also retains it.
Embracing Value Centered Leadership
As a Pharmacist Coach, I believe that value centered leadership is crucial for nurturing resilient and compassionate professionals. This approach not only connects like-minded leaders but also empowers pharmacists to refine their leadership styles in alignment with ethical practices.
Personal Development through values Centered Leadership:
As part of my growth and development, I am participating in DePaul University's Values Centered Leadership programme, which focuses on ethical leadership in organisations.? This programme has enriched my understanding of purposeful living, personal growth, professional development, and effective people partnerships.
Key Learnings from Leadership Development
Recent training highlighted the need for compassion and resilience among coaches. Facilitated by Lucy Shenouda and Dr. Taryn Marie Stayskal, the session delved into practices that enhance empathy in coaching. Key takeaways included:
Vulnerability and Connection: Embracing vulnerability strengthens connections within teams.
Productive Perseverance: Fostering resilience through mindful practices enhances empathetic connections.
Gratitude in Adversity: Cultivating a mindset that focuses on possibilities rather than perfection can lead to transformative changes.
Overcoming Internal Saboteurs
To lead effectively, it's vital to address internal saboteurs—those self sabotaging thoughts that hinder our ability to align with our core values. This is where coaching proves invaluable. Coaches can help individuals recognise these negative patterns, fostering a culture of positivity and alignment within teams.
The journey towards positive intelligence not only enhances self-awareness and emotional intelligence but also fosters clarity and purpose in leadership. Reflect on what negative thought patterns may be obstructing your leadership journey and consider how coaching can facilitate a shift towards a more constructive mindset.
The Role of Coaching in Values Driven Leadership
By definition, it is impossible to achieve organisational or team change alone.? Partnering with a leadership and/or team coach to support the process is an invaluable approach to embedding values into the fabric of leadership practices. By encouraging self-reflection and alignment with core values, coaching transforms these concepts into lived experiences. This shift is crucial for creating a high performing, ethical workplace.
Conclusion
As leaders, we have the power and responsibility to influence not just our teams but our actions (or inactions) ripple across the entire professional, community and business landscape. By embracing value centered leadership, acknowledging our internal saboteurs, and fostering a supportive work environment, we can enhance the effectiveness and resilience of our teams.
