Trust is a crucial aspect of any relationship, whether it be with family, friends, or colleagues. It is the foundation upon which these relationships are built, and it can be challenging to establish and maintain. Trust is a fragile thing, and once broken, it can be challenging to repair. In this article, we will explore the concept of trust and how it can affect our relationships. Specifically, we will discuss my personal struggles with trust and how I fought hard to allow the friends I had made over a period of time to come into my life, only to feel betrayed when they turned their back on me when I was at my most broken.
My Struggle with Trust:
As a child, I had a difficult time trusting people. Growing up in an unstable environment, I was conditioned to believe that people would always disappoint me. I struggled to make friends, preferring to keep to myself and avoid any potential disappointments. However, as I grew older, I realised that this was not a sustainable way to live. I craved the companionship of others and longed for meaningful relationships.
So, I made a conscious effort to trust people. I started by making small talk with acquaintances, and over time, I built up the courage to form deeper connections with others. It wasn't easy, and I still had moments of doubt and hesitation, but I persevered.
Over time, I had formed a small group of friends. We shared common interests and experiences, and I felt comfortable around them. I had started to open up to them, sharing my thoughts and feelings, something I had never done before. It was a significant milestone for me, and I was proud of myself for trusting others.
The Betrayal:
However, my trust was put to the test when I went through a difficult period in my life. I was going through a divorce, and it was an emotionally draining experience. I relied heavily on my friends for support, and they were there for me, listening to me and comforting me.
But then something changed. As I became more vulnerable, I noticed that my friends started to distance themselves from me. They stopped returning my calls, canceled plans, and avoided me altogether. I was confused and hurt. These were the people I had trusted, and they had turned their backs on me when I needed them the most.
I felt betrayed, and it was a crushing blow. The very thing I had feared my whole life had come true. I had trusted people, and they had let me down.

The Healing Process:
It took me a while to recover from this experience. I felt broken and lost, and I struggled to trust anyone again. I had lost faith in people, and it was a significant setback for me.
However, with time, I started to heal. I realised that not everyone is the same, and just because my friends had let me down, it didn't mean that everyone else would. I slowly started to form new connections with others, and I found that I was more cautious but still open to trusting others.
I also realised that trust is a two-way street. It is not just about trusting others but also about being trustworthy. I reflected on my own behaviour and recognised that I had not been the best friend I could have been. I had been guarded and distant, and I had not been there for my friends when they needed me.
This realisation was a turning point for me. I made a conscious effort to be a better friend, to listen more and be more present. I also started to set boundaries, recognising that not everyone is worthy of my trust, and that was okay.
Trust is a crucial aspect of any relationship. It can be challenging to establish and maintain, and once broken, it can be challenging to repair. My struggle with trust was a significant obstacle in my life, and it took a painful experience for me to realise the importance of trust and the impact it can have on our relationships.
However, through my healing process, I learned that trust is not just about others but also about ourselves. It is about being trustworthy and cultivating relationships that are built on honesty, respect, and vulnerability. It is about recognising that not everyone will meet our expectations, but that doesn't mean we should give up on trusting others altogether.
Trusting others is a risk, but it is also a reward. It allows us to form meaningful connections and to experience the joys of friendship and companionship. It is not always easy, and it takes time and effort, but the benefits are worth it.
So, if you are struggling with trust, know that you are not alone. It is a common challenge that many of us face, but it is also something that we can overcome. Start small, make connections, and be open to the possibility of trusting others. It may not happen overnight, but with time and effort, you can cultivate relationships built on trust and experience the many benefits that come with it.
