Building Trust between Europe and the US-- the 4th meeting of the Boston College Ireland Business Council
Tonight we will host the 4th gathering of the Boston College Ireland Business Council. Here is a selection from my opening remarks:
Following the 2016 Aer Lingus College Football Classic, Robert Mac Giolla Phadraig, Jim Kelliher, Neil Naughton, and myself sought for a way to make real on the promise of the game-- that is, we thought, as the slogan askes: how could we make it #MuchMoreThanAGame? The Business Council is what we created.
The Business Council has grown in unexpected ways, however, Since the Aer Lingus College Football Classic, Brexit happened; NAFTA has been renegotiated, and many of the institutions that the world relied on to operate have been altered, reorganized, or, simply, disorganized without any intention to be reorganized. A deficit developed and continues to grow in global leadership.
So what we do here at BCIBC has taken on new meaning and importance.
But what does the Boston College Ireland Business Council do? In two words: develops trust.
Our engagements seek to bring leaders from the Boston College business community into direct and frank conversation with leaders from the Irish business community. These meetings allow us to develop relationships rooted in mutual trust. This trust is critical; it is a cornerstone of our shared futures. It will allow us to develop new means of transatlantic exchange, benefiting both of us, both of our communities, and allowing us to address the leadership deficits that exist between our continents today.
Boston College-- Best Irish university in America
You have heard me say this before: Boston College aspires to be the finest Jesuit, Catholic university in the world. This means that we seek to develop the minds and talents of our community in the service of others-- we encourage our students to explore big challenges and to ask: what difference will I make? How will my knowledge serve the world?
We are a Jesuit, Catholic university that seeks to illuminate truth while serving others by responding to the world’s call.
The Boston College Ireland Business Council is clearly in the best traditions of Boston College’s Jesuit, Catholic mission.
But BC has another mission as well; and it is one we have embraced at the university. That mission is to be the Best Irish university in the United States. Tonight we celebrate that mission; And so I welcome our guests from Ireland Gateway to Europe, the Boston College Chief Executives Club, and the Boston College business community.
