Building a Team of Innovators

"What is the project you've worked on that you're most proud of?"

This has become a standard interview question for us as we continue to build up our team here at SwarmFarm. It’s my favorite question and? gives a good window into the candidate's level of creativity and initiative, along with how passionate they are about building something new and innovative. Being the leader in Integrated Autonomy means we don't have much of a manual to follow. We have to hire people excited to innovate and operate without a clear path forward, because from day one at SwarmFarm we were building a concept that was new to market.

Last summer, we were in the middle of raising our series A round of financing, and I was reminded of one of the best responses I ever received to this question when our soon-to-be lead investor, Sean, was talking to our team, and this question came up. Of course, Sean wanted to know some of the answers, and we began going around the room.

• Some people in our team had built their own software and apps, including sheep and cattle tracking software.
• Others had experience innovating around customer challenges in previous roles, like IoT devices for water level monitoring for dams, tanks and troughs.
• Drag cars, homemade racing drones, even a CubeSat came up as personal projects across the team, and many had really cool side projects projects they were still tinkering with?

Finally we came to Tom, who reminded us of his answer from his first interview with me back in 2016, "I built a robot that would bring me a beer from the fridge to my couch," he said.?

Of course, we had hired him immediately. While we all had a good laugh at the answer, the truth is that it was exactly the type of response we were looking for, and it showed us that this was the right person to join our team. As I listened to the team share their thoughts and move on to other topics of discussion, I realized that we had just organically discussed our company values - we believe that rural communities matter, we get it done, and we win as a team.?

As a CEO, it was a special moment to hear those values articulated back to me, not in some handbook or company poster on the wall, but directly coming from the people who are building this business with us.?

This reminded me that at SwarmFarm, we don't just hire people to fill roles - we are building a team of innovators who have the courage to try something new and push the limits of what has been done before. I’m so proud of our team and all we have accomplished together!

My Answer to the Question

When I reflect on the question, "What is the project you've worked on that you're most proud of?" My answer is the project that we are currently working on - the development of Integrated Autonomy for agriculture.?

Since 2012, our team has been working tirelessly to create autonomous farming solutions that can increase productivity, reduce costs, and ultimately help farmers to achieve sustainable outcomes.

What makes this project so exciting is its potential impact on the world. Agriculture is a critical industry, and by leveraging the power of autonomous technology, we can help farmers to overcome some of the biggest challenges they face. From sustainable farming practices through to rising costs, integrated autonomy has the potential to transform the way we approach agriculture and ensure that we are able to balance the needs of a growing population with our impact on our environment, and the ability for farmers to keep doing what we love for generations to come.

Looking back on our journey so far, I am incredibly proud of everything that we have accomplished as a team. From our early days building prototypes in our farm shed to where we are now, it is clear that we have come a long way. But more than anything, I am excited about what the future holds. With the development of Integrated Autonomy, we are not just building a business - we are building a new farming system that promises to build a better world. And that is something that we can all be proud of.
