Building Team Diversity
"Encapsulating" some of my personal reflections as articles for ease of reference.
This was first posted back in April 2019.
This morning, an ex-colleague informed me that she had been promoted and thanked me. I was elated for her success and congratulated her. I reflected on why she thanked me. Is it out of politeness?
In my years as a hiring manager, I have took chances on certain individuals. Some were direct hires, some were transfers from other teams. Not that they were not good, but they were different from the core team, and did not have the most relevant experience among the other candidates. But I took them precisely because they were different, and also because they have extremely good attitude and possesses can-do mindset. I would say all these individuals are now doing quite well in their careers. Some are likely to exceed my own accomplishments.
Suggestion to job seekers - Be Yourself, and Do The Right Thing. If you are not being yourself, you will not be able to sustain the momentum and pace. If you do not do the right thing, likely you are more destructive to the organisation than good. Don’t be afraid to be different.
Suggestion to hirers - take chance. Not always, but when the right candidate comes along. Adopt a portfolio view like in investment. Have space for 1 or 2 outlier bets. Chances are, the diversity and energy that they bring, will pay off in ways beyond your expectations.
