Building the Symbio Bridge
Winning student competition design gets built, feel free to share!
The Symbio Bridge is the winning design that emerged from an architectural competition held among students of TU Delft. The author of the winning design, former Building Technology student Rafail Gkaidatzis, won a € 1.200 money prize, but more importantly, saw his design get built.
The competition was commissioned by Recreatieschap Midden Delfland and the Municipality of Delft and sponsored by DIMI. My role from the Integral Bridge Design Group at Delft University of Technology was to initiated, organize and jury the competition.
After his graduation, Rafail worked as an architect and bridge designer in my team at Royal HaskoningDHV. Under my supervision, Rafail's next task was to elaborate his design.
With the help of RHDHV's structural engineer Ton Boeters and Kevin Colwell to lead the project, the detail design was made and the Symbio bridge was tendered. Damsteegt was contracted to built the bridge in 2015. The opening ceremony will be held on september 10th.
