This past week on #linkedinpresents Entrepreneur Struggle, we wrap up our 2nd season with a candid conversation with Jeff Umbro , the mastermind behind The Podglomerate , a podcast production, distribution, and monetization company. Throughout this conversation you’ll gain a deep understanding of Jeff's entrepreneurial journey, marked by both challenges and accomplishments.
Finding the Right Path: The Genesis of The Podglomerate
Jeff Umbro's journey into the podcasting realm began with his foray into producing podcasts back in 2014. His first podcast, "Writers Who Don't Write," paved the way for his venture into the podcast landscape. At the time he was a book publicist, and he created the podcast as a way to connect with authors and bring in more business for the company he was working for. But then he fell in love with podcasting! So much so that he decided to leave the book publishing industry and he began applying for podcasting jobs. The problem was that he had no true experience outside of what he had taught himself, so he couldn’t get anyone to hire him. But he didn’t let that minor detail deter him. Instead he decided to create his own podcasting company. Jeff also identified the need for an agency that could connect advertisers with high-quality podcast content, which would become the sweet spot for his new company, The Podglomerate, an agency focused on bridging the gap between advertisers and podcasters.
Early Hurdles and Essential Lessons
In the pursuit of his entrepreneurial dream, Jeff encountered his fair share of obstacles. Striking a balance between content creation and business development proved daunting, especially as he was coming from a marketing background. Jeff's firsthand experience revealed the importance of pricing services accurately. Undervaluing initial services taught him the pivotal lesson of assessing the true value of his offerings.
Managing Growth and Decision Fatigue
As The Podglomerate continued to grow, Jeff had to address the challenges that come with success. The administrative demands of scaling a business can be overwhelming and lead to decision fatigue. Finding the right balance between managing administrative tasks and staying connected to creative aspects is an ongoing challenge for him and other entrepreneurs. He also acknowledged that as the company becomes more and more successful, he finds himself having to handle more administrative duties that take him away from the tasks that he’s most passionate about.
Embracing Victories and Cultivating a Strong Team
Amid the struggles, Jeff derives immense satisfaction from The Podglomerate's triumphs. Central to their success is a dedicated team. The company's focus on fostering a positive work culture, valuing employee well-being, and establishing effective systems contributed significantly to their achievements.
"It's super cool to see how effective the staff is when it comes to executing this stuff... We have systems for everything now, which is so silly to say. But it is so important in order to not only run the business well, but to make sure that everybody is happy with their job." -Jeff Umbro
Jeff's entrepreneurial journey is a tapestry woven with insightful revelations, tactical adaptations, and a relentless dedication to nurturing a harmonious workplace environment. The Podglomerate's accomplishments exemplify his unwavering entrepreneurial spirit and resolute tenacity.
