The holiday season is upon us, a time for reflection, being thankful, and looking ahead. As we prepare to embrace 2025, it's the perfect moment to consider how we can strengthen our relationships within our partnership ecosystems. In today's interconnected world, successful partnerships are more critical than ever.? I’ve had the benefit of operating in ecosystems for multiple CSPs and sitting on both sides of the partnership table.? While I don’t have it all figured out, I think I am getting better at it every day.
Here are my five key ingredients to help you cultivate thriving ecosystem partnerships in the coming year:
- Be Known for Something: Figure out your super-power, your differentiator, and then ensure you become known for it.? Sure, being great at everything is awesome, but the reality is, in a crowded ecosystem, you need to make sure your partner knows you for something specific.? Also, you have to bring relevant, timely, and impactful customer stories to bring you differentiators to light.? Pro tip - you cannot say you are great at something until you have 3 strong, referenceable client qualifications.? I’ve never had a partner seller or prospect ask me for a fourth example.
- Make the News, Don’t Just Report It: While it is critical measure success and to surround yourself with great teammates, trust them, and delegate to them, to stay sharp, you need to be in the mix.? If you are not getting your hands dirty on a daily basis - with specific deals, escalations, or thinking about how to make your next GTM real - you are just spectating.? Keeping score is table stakes, not your end goal.
- Set Audacious Goals and Crush Them: While this is certainly easier said than done, we all need to be setting big goals, thinking 10x, and actually putting in the time and resources to get there.? This is only way to show that your partnership is focused on playing offense, winning, and contributing materially to your company’s button line.? Whether it was taking a partner from 60 certifications to over 1000 in 12 months, or growing Partner Influenced Consumption by 45%, aiming high, even if you miss once in a while, gets you further than you would have gotten with a more conservative approach.
- Transparency, the Often Overlooked Ingredient to Partnership Success: Encourage a culture of transparency within your ecosystem. You can’t win together if you aren’t being honest about expectations and needs.? Sometimes, the best partner says “no”.? Full stop.? In order to achieve win-wins (plus another win for customers), there is give and take in the equation.? I never want to say “yes”, no matter how much my partner on the other side of the table wants it, if it is something I cannot deliver on.
- Build a Great Team, Win Together, and Celebrate Success: I’ve had a long career in leading organizations and the thing I always disliked most is seeing “successful” leaders who lose as a team and win alone.? I cannot stand that.? Winning is a team sport.? If you surround yourself with great, committed people, and then celebrate and reward their success, you are investing in a dynasty, rather than just one winning season.
By embracing these principles, you can build stronger, more resilient partnerships that will drive mutual success in 2025 and beyond. Remember, in a thriving ecosystem, everyone benefits. Let's make 2025 the year of collaborative growth and shared prosperity.
Happy Holidays and best wishes for a successful new year!
