Building A Strong Team

Build your sales team with people who have different strengths and unique talents. Help your team identify their strength and coach them to use those strengths to their advantage. In the age old argument of nature vs nurture the fastest way to success is to build and develop the areas you are already good at. On a microscopic level our brain has a mental network already in place. So certain behaviours, patterns and reactions “just feel better” and others, no matter how much we practice, seem difficult and awkward. If you train your people only on their weaknesses they become unsatisfied and disengaged. That’s not to say that you shouldn’t help them develop in those areas, but it will never develop to be an area of excellence for them. Choosing members with different strengths and building on their strengths can develop a team that has many areas of excellence. As their manager, coach them to communicate, collaborate, and approach challenges as a team. This will create an environment where they can realize their potential. There is an establishment that subscribes to “process” as a means to achieve performance. They define the steps and try to teach each individual to walk the same path. This results in over scripting and over-reliance on process. A step by step process driven sales team by design can inhibit creativity and stifle the inherent individuality of each sales person. In contrast a strength-based sales team will capitalize on individuality. This will fuel the momentum that comes from getting things right because it comes naturally. Success just feels better! If you want engaged genuine sales people who can apply their own creativity to the challenges of daily business, learn what their strengths are. At Colleen Madsen Strategies we can help.
