Building a Strong Foundation: How Cement Making Impacts Your Daily Life

As a person, cement-making may not seem immediately relevant to your day-to-day life, I know.

However, the importance of cement cannot be understated.


Cement is the key ingredient in concrete, which is used to construct buildings, bridges, roads, and other infrastructure essential for modern life. Without cement, it would be impossible to build the structures we rely on every day. In addition, the cement industry provides jobs and drives economic growth in many communities. So while you may not work in the cement industry or use cement directly in your daily life, it plays a vital role in the world around us.


In this article, I'll be sharing how I learned how to make this cement and concrete, by just attending classes (I'm serious??) and relating this with why having a solid foundation both in life and construction matters.

As a final-year student in Materials and Metallurgical engineering, I was taught about Portland cement and its importance in modern concrete. So, we'll be exploring the history and properties of Portland cement, the role of gypsum in cement manufacturing, the different stages of Portland cement production, the types of concrete available, and the importance of using the right cement for specific applications.


What is Portland Cement?

In simple terms, Portland cement is a special kind of powder that's used to make concrete. It's made by heating up a mixture of rocks and clay called clinker, along with a few other things like gypsum. When you mix Portland cement with water, it forms a hard material that's strong and durable, which is why it's used for structures like building houses, bridges, and roads to make them really strong and sturdy.

According to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), Portland cement is a "hydraulic binder produced by pulverizing clinker consisting essentially of hydraulic calcium silicates and containing one or more forms of calcium sulfate as an inter-ground addition."

Various types of Cement exist but why is our focus the Portland cement?

Portland cement has been used in construction for over 200 years and is known for its strength and durability. Portland cement is also versatile in its use, is easy to produce, and has the ability to harden and set quickly, making it ideal for construction projects that require a strong and durable foundation. Additionally, it has a lower carbon footprint when compared to other types of cement, making it a more sustainable choice.

Just like how Portland cement is known for its strength and durability in building structures, building a strong foundation in life is essential for personal growth and success. Just as Portland cement is versatile and can be used in a variety of construction projects, having a strong foundation allows you as an individual to navigate through different situations and challenges in life.

Furthermore, as Portland cement can harden and set quickly, a strong foundation will allow you to make decisions and take action with confidence and determination. Lastly, same way Portland cement is a sustainable choice with a lower carbon footprint, building a strong foundation in life through positive values and habits can lead to a more fulfilling and sustainable future.

A Brief History of Portland Cement

Portland cement was invented by Joseph Aspdin in 1824 in England. Aspdin named it "Portland" because it resembled the color of the Portland stone, a white-grey limestone found on the Isle of Portland in Dorset, England. The initial production of Portland cement used limestone and clay as raw materials, but nowadays, other raw materials such as slag, fly ash, and pozzolana can also be used.


The Role of Gypsum in Cement Manufacturing

Gypsum is a crucial component in the production of Portland cement. Gypsum is added during the grinding process to regulate the setting time of the cement. Without gypsum, the cement would set too quickly, making it difficult to work with. The addition of gypsum slows down the setting time, allowing the concrete to be workable for a longer period, which is essential for construction applications.


Same way gypsum ensures that the cement mixture is consistent and strong, providing a solid foundation for any construction project. Having a solid foundation in life, such as a strong support system or a good education, can help you build a reliable and successful future.

The Different Stages of Portland Cement Manufacturing

Portland cement manufacturing involves four main stages: quarrying and crushing raw materials, blending the raw materials, clinker production, and cement grinding. In the first stage, the raw materials such as limestone and clay are extracted from the quarry and crushed to a fine powder. In the second stage, the powder is mixed to form a homogenous mixture, which is heated in the third stage to produce clinker. In the final stage, the clinker is ground with gypsum to produce cement.

Time for Concrete...


Concrete is a building material that is made by mixing Portland cement, water, and aggregates (such as sand, gravel, or crushed stone) together. The mixture is then poured into a formwork, where it is allowed to harden and set, resulting in a solid and durable material that can be used for a variety of construction projects.


You must have seen this process a lot of times with builders/masons, so yeah it is what it is.


Types of Concrete and Their Applications

There are several types of concrete, each with its unique properties and applications. Some of the common types of concrete include:

  1. Normal concrete: This is the most commonly used concrete in construction. It has a compressive strength of 20-40 MPa and is suitable for most applications.
  2. High-strength concrete: This type of concrete has a compressive strength of over 40 MPa and is commonly used in high-rise buildings and bridges.
  3. Lightweight concrete: This type of concrete is made using lightweight aggregates such as expanded clay or shale. It has a low density and is suitable for applications where weight is a concern.
  4. Self-compacting concrete: This type of concrete is designed to flow into formwork without the need for vibration. It is commonly used in complex structures where it is difficult to achieve good compaction.


I'm learning about this as a Met-Mat Engineer so the quality and performance of the cement and concrete used in construction projects would not be compromised, thereby resulting in weaker structures that are more susceptible to damage and failure over time, which could have severe consequences for the safety of the people who use those structures.

In the same vein, you shouldn't be cutting corners while laying the foundation of your life now, so you won't have terrible consequences in the future.??

The Importance of Using the Right Cement for Specific Applications

Choosing the right cement for a specific application is crucial for the durability and longevity of the structure. For example, high alumina cement is preferred in applications where resistance to corrosion is needed. High alumina cement is produced using bauxite, a mineral-rich in alumina, and has a higher resistance to chemical attacks than Portland cement.
