Building a Solid Foundation: The Vital Importance of Prioritising Safety Training on Construction Sites

Empowering Employers and Workers to Create a Safe and Secure Construction Environment

Controlling contractors has been a significant health and safety issue for all companies, particularly facilities management companies, since the legal precedent set by the Octel case in 1996. This case set the legal bar for the requirement a client has when selecting, approving, and overseeing contractors undertaking work on their or their own client’s behalf.

To meet that requirement, you need to be aware of these key points and your responsibilities under the legislation.

Make safety a priority

It’s crucial for employers and workers to prioritise safety on construction sites through regular safety training. There are many risks involved when working on a construction site one of which is electrocution. Electricity can and does take lives, it’s not something you can see, feel, hear or smell so care must be taken to avoid electrocution on building sites.

Electrocution

Construction sites have a high presence of electrical wires, power lines, and electrical equipment. Workers can be at risk of electrocution if they come into contact with live wires or faulty electrical systems. Electrical accidents can result in severe injuries or even death.

The?Ligtas: Electrical Safety Awareness ?course will provide employees with knowledge of what the hazards are regarding electricity and what precautions should be taken to prevent electrical shock.

This course will not qualify you to work on electrical systems.

Who is this course for?

This entry-level awareness course is aimed at all employees to ensure that there is a general understanding of electrical safety issues and requirements in the workplace. The course is particularly useful for those people who need an understanding of electrical safety, such as those appointing contractors to work on their behalf.

Inadequate safety training and supervision

Stats published by IOSH found that 7,500 people around the world still die from unsafe and unhealthy working conditions every day.

This is in part due to inadequate safety training and supervision. Insufficient training and lack of proper supervision contribute to the hazards on construction sites. Workers who are unfamiliar with safety protocols, procedures, and equipment operations are more susceptible to accidents. Additionally, inadequate supervision can result in workers taking unnecessary risks or not adhering to safety guidelines.

It’s crucial for employers and workers to prioritise safety on construction sites through regular safety training, the implementation of safety protocols, proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and the presence of qualified supervisors who can enforce safety practices.

One way to do this is for everyone to complete the?Ligtas: NEBOSH Health and Safety Management for Construction (UK) Course .
