Building Safer Spaces for Neurodivergent Kids

"How can we make safe spaces for our neurodivergent children?"

It's a great question and one we hear often! Whether at home or in the classroom, we want to ensure kids of all abilities feel welcomed, secure, and part of the group.?

So, where can we start??

The Right Equipment?

Here's a crucial way to help neurodivergent kiddos feel most comfortable: make sure you have the right tools.?

For example, children with autism may need a space where they can curl up with a blanket and some noise-canceling headphones to self-regulate. Children with ADHD may need fidget toys or alternative seating options to satisfy movement impulses. Those with learning disabilities may need more time built into activities or extra materials to do their best.

If you can't provide these items yourself, encourage the kids to bring whatever they need to feel at home.?

Open Communication

Neurotypical children may not be used to neurodivergent behaviors, and the best way to bridge the gap of understanding is simple: open communication.

Whether or not your neurodivergent children feel comfortable sharing their diagnosis with a group, the adults in charge should have a conversation with everyone about inclusivity.?

For example, you could say, "We accept everyone in our group, even if they may act differently than us. We practice patience and understanding here. We support one another, overcome challenges together, and recognize each other's strengths."

Play Towards Their Strengths

Speaking of strengths, ask yourself: How can you give neurodivergent children the chance to shine?

Consider inviting children with autism to share facts about their special interests or asking kids with ADHD if they'd like to show off their dance moves. Finding ways for your neurodivergent children to bring their authentic selves to the forefront can break down social barriers and help them feel safer.?
