Building a Safer Future: Valeo Construction's Commitment Post-Engineered Stone Ban

At Valeo Construction, our commitment to workplace safety is driven by a profound understanding of the risks involved in our industry, particularly those associated with crystalline silica dust. The upcoming nationwide ban on the use of engineered stone, effective from 1 July 2024, as announced by @WorkSafeVictoria, is a significant regulatory change aimed at protecting workers from the dangers of silica exposure—a cause we are deeply committed to.

Understanding the Risks

Inhaling crystalline silica dust can lead to silicosis, a debilitating and potentially fatal lung disease. The urgency of addressing this health issue is reflected in the forthcoming engineered stone ban, a critical measure designed to eradicate this risk from our work environments.

Exploring Safer Alternatives

In response to the upcoming ban and its implications for health and safety, Valeo Construction is collaborating with @worksafevictoria and industry partners to identify and adopt alternative products that do not pose the same health risks as engineered stone. Our goal is not only to comply with new regulations but to lead the way in adopting materials that ensure our workforce's continued health and safety. Here are some promising alternatives we are considering:

?

Ultra-Compact Surfaces: These are made from a blend of raw materials used in glass, porcelain, and quartz surfaces. They offer similar aesthetics to engineered stone but with higher durability and less porousness.

Porcelain Slabs: Known for their durability and safety, porcelain slabs are an excellent alternative to engineered stone. They resist heat, scratches, and stains and do not contain crystalline silica.

Natural Stone: Natural stones like granite or marble, which generally have lower levels of crystalline silica than engineered stone, can be a safer alternative for specific applications.

Recycled Glass Surfaces: These are environmentally friendly and provide a unique aesthetic with a wide variety of colours and finishes. They are composed of up to 100% recycled glass, bonded with non-toxic resin.

Quartz (Breton process): Some quartz manufacturers use a patented process that significantly reduces the silica content, making it safer for cutting and installation.

Commitment to Safety and Innovation

As we explore these alternatives, Valeo Construction remains dedicated to ensuring that any new materials meet our high safety, functionality, and environmental sustainability standards. Our proactive approach to sourcing safer materials is part of our broader commitment to leading by example in the construction industry, ensuring that we not only meet but exceed safety regulations.
