Building robust interactive exhibits

To paraphrase Thomas Hobbes - the life of an #interactive #exhibit in a #museum or science centre can sometimes be nasty, brutish and short. So what can we do to avoid the horrible of broken and malfunctioning exhibits?

I'm looking for advice on how to ensure interactive exhibits are robusting, long lasting and as low maintenance as possible. What should a museum or science centre include in the exhibit brief to ensure this? What should they be asking of the exhibit designer? What operational procedures help to prolong the life of interactive exhibits? Do you know of any interactive exhibits that have had particularly long (or brief) lives?
