Building resilient technical team as a Technical Product Manager

Building resilient technical team as a Technical Product Manager

It is easy to say I am a manager but building a resilient team woven with respect and trust are becoming rare and what we should all crave.

What does a Resilient Team entail ?

A resilient technical team is one that is able to bounce back from setbacks and challenges. It is a team that is able to adapt to change and continue to deliver high-quality work, even in difficult times. This is the kind of team every Technical Product Manager should strive to develop.

As a Technical Product Manager (TPM), you can play a key role in developing a resilient technical team. Here are some tips I deploy:

  1. Foster a culture of trust and respect. This is essential for any team to be successful, but it is especially important for technical teams, which often have to work closely together to solve complex problems. Make sure that everyone on the team feels comfortable sharing their ideas and opinions, and that they know that they are valued and respected.
  2. Create a clear and inspiring vision for the team. What are you trying to achieve together? What are the team’s goals and priorities? Make sure that everyone on the team understands the vision and is aligned with it. This can be difficult to achieve especially if the TPM is not self-aware. To achieve this seamlessly work with the strengths of your team and diminish their weaknesses.
  3. Provide the team with the resources they need to succeed. This includes access to the right tools and technologies, as well as opportunities for training and development. Grant them the exposure they deserve.
  4. Empower the team to make decisions and take ownership of their work. This will help to build trust and confidence, and it will also make the team more resilient in the face of challenges.
  5. Celebrate successes and learn from failures. When the team achieves a goal, take the time to celebrate their success. This will help to boost morale and motivation. And when the team makes a mistake, don’t dwell on it. Instead, focus on learning from it and moving on.
  6. Have fun !

Spoiler Alert: Not all team members will align with the above points. Some team members need to be managed while others you have to lead. So you need to know which Strategy should be deployed for any circumstance.

Every resilient team should also live by this culture of conducting as many experiments as possible quickly to get to the solution faster. Just as the article rightly says to learn from mistakes, because most of those experiments will be failed experiments but the knowledge and insight they provide are valuable.
