Building Resilience
Losing my mum mid this year after a brief illness was the biggest test that I’ve ever faced in my life. A test of how far I could withstand pain and grief, a test of being able to forgive those who “expedited” her illness and above all a test of how quickly I could recover from such a shocking event. ?It took me almost four months to come back to my feet and reconcile with the reality of her not being anymore. One word that stood out during this entire experience was RESILIENCE. I googled the best definitions of Resilience and settled on the following:
1.????? Resilience as defined by the American Psychological Association (APA)
Resilience is the process and outcome of successfully adapting to difficult or challenging life experiences, especially through mental, emotional, and behavioral flexibility and adjustment to external and internal demands.
Resilience means having the mental, emotional, and behavioral flexibility and ability to adjust to both internal and external demands.
2.????? Resilience as defined by Resilience Training UK
Resilience is the ability to adapt to change positively, recover from difficulties and persist in facing challenges. It’s about growing stronger, not weaker after life throws you a curveball. Resilient people aren’t perfect and don’t always react positively to stressful situations — but they have a trusted support network that helps them get through difficult times. Resilience is not a characteristic you are born with or not; it’s something you build over time through intentional practices and techniques
