Building Resilience From Your Higher Self

Building Resilience From Your Higher Self

Today, I will discuss how we can use our brain to build resilience.? You can read the unabridged version of my article Higher Self Leaders Build Resilience .

If you're familiar with my leadership model , you know the four core principles of Higher Self Leadership: self-awareness, unity consciousness , intuitive connection, and inspiring others. For those who aren't, this transformative approach integrates these principles to tap into one's higher self, fostering inner strength, high-perspective decision-making , and an environment grounded in love and unity.

What is Resilience?

Resilience is the ability to recover quickly from difficulties, involving emotional regulation , optimism, adaptability, and a positive outlook. It's the key to overcoming life's unexpected challenges, enabling us to stay strong and positive no matter what life throws our way. High resilience allows people to handle stress , adapt to changes, and keep moving forward despite setbacks.

True Resilience

True resilience is not about maintaining a stiff upper lip or swallowing emotions. It involves recognising and feeling negative emotions while still taking action to protect and heal oneself. Resilient individuals understand their feelings as part of their emotional guidance system and can pivot towards a more positive state. This is how Higher Self Leaders build resilience.

Misusing Resilience to Excuse Bad Behavior

Resilience should not be used to excuse bullying or inappropriate behaviour. In some organisations, distressed individuals are criticized for "lacking resilience" instead of being protected. Enlightened organizations respond with empathy and support , fostering a safe environment for emotional expression and help without judgment.

Responses to Life Challenges

Resilience is crucial in various life situations, helping individuals navigate and overcome challenges. Shawn Achor, in his book "The Happiness Advantage ," describes three ways to respond to difficulties: "Falling Back," "Keeping the Status Quo," and "Falling Up."

  1. Falling Back: Overwhelmed by a challenge, leading to decreased confidence, motivation, and life satisfaction.
  2. Keeping the Status Quo: Enduring the challenge without significant improvement or deterioration, missing opportunities for growth.
  3. Falling Up: Using adversity as a springboard for growth and improvement, leading to enhanced resilience, increased happiness, and greater success.

Higher Self Leaders are more likely to "fall up," supporting their teams and organisations to do the same.

Ego vs. Higher Self Leadership - Building Resilience

Initial reactions often come from the ego , driven by fear and immediate emotional responses. However, resilience lies in shifting to a higher self response, using calm and rational thinking to navigate challenges. Higher Self Leaders cultivate a resilient approach by shifting their mindset from that fear-based ego thought system to the intuitive, big-picture higher thought system .

Here are some examples:

1. The Ability to Recover

When faced with a major challenge like job loss, the ego and amygdala may react with fear, panic, and helplessness. Immediate responses could include negative thoughts such as "I'll never find another job" or "This is the end of my career," leading to prolonged stress, anxiety, and difficulty moving forward.

The higher self, guided by the prefrontal cortex and intuition, would address the situation with calm and rational thinking. This involves acknowledging the loss, processing emotions, and planning actionable steps like updating the resume, networking, and applying for new jobs. The result is a faster recovery and a proactive approach to overcoming the setback.

2. Staying Strong During Tough Times

In difficult times, the ego and amygdala may heighten feelings of frustration, anger, or defeat. Thoughts like "I can't handle this" or "Why does this always happen to me?" can dominate, leading to a sense of giving up or avoiding the challenge.

Conversely, the higher self maintains a perspective of strength and perseverance. The prefrontal cortex focuses on problem-solving, breaking down obstacles into manageable parts, and encouraging a mindset of "I can get through this" or "This is an opportunity to grow." The result is sustained effort and resilience through adversity.

3. Adapting to Change

The ego and amygdala often resist change due to fear of the unknown and a preference for familiarity. This can result in anxiety, stress, and attempts to cling to old ways, with thoughts like "I don't want things to change" or "I can't handle this new situation."

The higher self embraces change as a natural part of life. Utilizing the prefrontal cortex, this approach involves seeing change as an opportunity for growth and new experiences. Thoughts like "How can I make the most of this change?" or "What can I learn from this?" lead to greater adaptability and positive outcomes.

Resilience is Like Building a Muscle

Resilience, like a muscle, can be developed, strengthened, and toned over time through practice and effort. This analogy helps us understand that resilience is not an inherent trait but a skill that can be cultivated. By operating from your higher self and utilizing the principles of Higher Self Leadership, you can build a strong foundation of resilience. Constantly practising a different response is how Higher Self Leaders build resilience.
