Building a Personal Data Bridge to enable Personal AI

We are excited to announce that Verida is building a “Personal Data Bridge” to enable user data to be unlocked from centralized platforms and made available for a new generation of personal AI applications and web3 applications that require user data.

Our personal data today is locked in centralized databases controlled by big tech, banks, healthcare providers, and governments. Verida is building the necessary infrastructure and tools to help individuals extract their data from these platforms and then use it for exciting new use cases such as personal AI.

Unlocking User Data

Verida is building the critical infrastructure to enable users to reclaim their personal data from any centralized platform, securely store it on decentralized database infrastructure and provide the tools to consent to the use of their data.

This unlocks user data to be integrated into the next generation of hyper-personal applications such as AI agents and disruptive user-centric web3 applications.

The Personal Data Bridge is the connective tissue between centralized web2 platforms and end users, enabling them to easily take ownership and control of their personal data.

The Personal Data Bridge consists of a Data Connector API with corresponding framework for integrating with centralized APIs, along with a user interface in the Verida Vault for end users to easily connect, disconnect and configure the data they pull from centralized platforms.

Verida’s personal data bridge opens up numerous possibilities:

  • DeFi: Private and reusable on-chain credentials for KYC and credit scores, enabling under-collateralized lending and insurance products.
  • Healthcare: AI-powered personalized care with secure messaging and follow-up processes.
  • Metaverse: Portable personal profiles and player data across games and guilds.
  • AI: Personalized AI products that have access to a digital twin for highly personalized interactions

These applications highlight the potential of combining decentralized identity, user-owned data, and crypto assets to create a more user-centric internet.

Verida’s approach to off-chain data storage is designed for privacy, speed, and security. Data is stored in encrypted databases, inaccessible to unauthorized users, and transactions are recorded quickly without waiting for network confirmations. This method reduces the risk of data breaches and provides a seamless user experience.

Data Connections in the Verida Vault

The Verida Vault is currently in development and will be made available in Q3 2024. It provides an easy web interface for users to manage their personal data, connect to third party applications, and pull their data from centralized platforms.

Users can pull their personal data from platforms such as Meta, Google, X, Email, LinkedIn, Strava, and much more. This data is encrypted and stored in a user-controlled personal data Vault on the Verida network.

Users can accept data access requests from third party applications, allowing them to connect their personal data with emerging personal AI applications.

Data Connector API

The Verida Data Connector API is currently in development and will be made available in Q3 2024. It is a secure web service that enables a user to authenticate with a centralized platform to take ownership of their personal data stored with that service, to be stored, encrypted in the user’s personal data vault.

This API will operate within Verida’s recently announced self-sovereign confidential compute infrastructure, ensuring user data is not visible to any infrastructure operator and is protected at all times in the data lifecycle.

The data migration status of each connector is tracked, so data can regularly synchronize and be kept up-to-date as new information becomes available. As such, this creates a near real time stream of data flowing into a user’s personal data vault.

User data is mapped into common data schemas to create an ecosystem of interoperable data. For example, social media posts from X, Facebook and LinkedIn are merged into a common “social post” schema for easy integration.

All user data is signed, so it can be independently verified to have originated from a particular third party platform.

The Data Connector API is built on an open framework, enabling any developer to contribute new connectors for centralized platforms. In this way, we can rapidly scale the number of data sources available for end users and maximize the volume of personal data users can take ownership of.

Centralized platforms have a monopoly over how your data is used, with any innovation or products using your data limited to what those platforms build.

The future of web3 depends on the growth of user adoption and application development. Verida’s data bridge is a significant step towards achieving this vision, enabling a more connected, personalized, and user-controlled internet. As more off-chain data sources are integrated, the potential for new applications and services will continue to expand, driving the vibrant Web3 ecosystem we all anticipate.
