This week, we’re diving deep into a topic that touches all of us at some point in our careers and personal lives: perseverance - which can display itself differently for women.
Jennifer wanted to be the next Diane Sawyer in college, but shortly after graduating she became a stay-at- home mom. Fast forward - kids, a divorce - and her plans melted into dust.
In the latest episode of my podcast Aging With Purpose And Passion, Jennifer shares her compelling story, from facing ageism in the broadcasting industry at just 31, to embracing a pivotal career shift into gerontology.
But Jennifer never gave up. Through a long, hard transformative journey, from living out of her parents basement with her kids, she finally persevered and found a job in media. Today, Jennifer is championing the cause of older adults and she's becoming known as the "Diane Sawyer of the AARP generation." Clearly it took grit and determination to keep following her dream.

How can you keep going when your challenges seem insurmountable?
Here are a few simple practical tools to remember:
Set Clear, Achievable Goals
First things first - break down your grand ambitions into bite-sized pieces. It’s not just about making the goal easier to manage; it’s about creating a series of steps that lead to progress. Each small victory is a building block for your confidence and a testament to your ability to succeed.
Maintain a Positive Mindset
Optimism isn’t about ignoring life’s pressures; it's about fostering a state of mind that looks for solutions rather than dwelling on problems. Remind yourself regularly of your achievements—no matter how small—and allow this attitude to sculpt your approach to new challenges.
Develop a Strong Reason 'Why'
Your 'why' is your anchor; it’s the reason you get up every morning and push through the tough times. Maybe it’s a personal aspiration or the desire to make a difference in the world. When the going gets tough, remind yourself of this reason to rekindle your motivation.
Embrace Challenges as Learning Opportunities
Every challenge has a lesson hidden within it. When faced with a setback, instead of letting frustration set in, ask yourself, “What can I learn from this?” Approaching obstacles with a learning mindset can transform roadblocks into paths forward.

Practice Patience
Success rarely comes overnight, and understanding this is crucial. Patience is about respecting the process and recognizing that growth takes time. Encourage yourself to view perseverance as a journey rather than a means to an end.
Stay Flexible
The ability to adapt is a superpower. Our lives can change in a heartbeat, and success often depends on your ability to pivot. This might mean tweaking your goals, adjusting your timelines, or even overhauling your approach based on new insights.
Maintain Physical and Mental Health
It’s hard to keep going if you’re not feeling your best. Regular exercise, a healthy diet, and sufficient rest are fundamental. And don’t underestimate the power of taking breaks. Downtime clears your mind and reduces stress.
Refuel Your Passion
Sometimes, in the grind of chasing the goal, you can lose sight of the spark that started it all in the first place. Take time to reconnect with the passion that set you on your path. Whether it's revisiting old notes, reflecting on past successes, or just spending time thinking about the bigger picture, keep your passion alive.
Perseverance isn’t just about having the strength to go on; it's about setting yourself up for success with the right habits and attitudes. And the top of your list should be 'Remember your 'Why' and keep going.
Until next time, keep pushing, keep learning, and keep growing. Your tenacity is more powerful than you think.
Warm regards,
Bev
