Building the peace in Somalia
It is clear that major efforts are underway to bring lasting peace to the Horn or Africa. Once peace is at hand, it opens the door for ordinary Somalis to begin to enjoy stability, open businesses, have a family and prosper.
However good the military victory may be that afforded such a peace, to be lasting, the peace must be built upon to ensure that bad elements do not filter back in. Building the peace is a literal term, meaning roads, bridges, water projects, schools, stadiums, airports - things that are good- things that attract good energy and open minded forward looking people.
When the coastal fisheries are bolstered from the new reefs it greatly empowers women. As we see in West Africa, women manage the sale and distribution of seafood. This role will likely also occur on Somalia giving rise to a whole new sector of good paying, important work for women.
So moving into the new era of peace, stability and what may lead to great prosperity for Somalia, the Fish Reef Project is proud to play a vital role. The reefs we make off the Somali coast will provided thousands of jobs, millions of kilograms of high quality marine protein, ocean health and it will help keep fishing close to shore to avoid the temptation of the return of piracy via growth of the offshore fleets. The new reefs will be one piece of the larger Great African Food Reef and will a leave positive legacy for mankind and a rare sparkle of hope in a region that has such great potential for prosperity. Fish Reef Project stands with all Somalis that want a brighter future and a heathy ocean. www.fishreef.org
