What does it take to scale a business? I have been working as an entrepreneur for over 1300 days. I have learned a lot of things about business and people. I still have so much to learn. Number one, I have continued to learn what things are most important in life, and number two what is most important to a business needing to grow and scale and how these two things intertwine with each other.

CHAPTER 5: PERSISTENCE AND RESILIENCE
I just watched a documentary last night about James Dyson, Founder of the Dyson Vacuums. I shared the story with my brother. It's nice to see people who were persistent as me, because it helps me realize how much success is actually in store for me in addition to the success I have already had over my 20 year professional career. After 5,000 tries James Dyson finally built the prototype that made him into a multi-billionaire.
So, what is the key to developing persistence and resilience? And why it is so important in business.
My answer is pretty simple, although some may find it a little, over-the-top.
My answer is of life and death comprehension. When we develop a better and more realistic understanding and feeling of life and death, I believe we begin to take life more seriously. I take life seriously more so I think than most because I have seen some crazy things that most will not. Everyday we waste, we perish. But by building a legacy and a reputation, you will live forever.
Life is not certain, death is, and that is why it is up to us to live everyday to the fullest underneath our purpose.
In light of Valentines Day coming up I will refer to a rose bush.
Life is like a rose bush. A rose bush can live for many years with proper care, but roses as a flower do not last long by themselves.
A bush however can continue to produce flowers as long as the dead flower heads are removed.
So back to purpose and resilience. Your purpose is like the rose bush and its roots which should be stable as such. Your resilience is your ability to continue to reproduce new flowers and remove the dead flowers e.g. negativity. Cut roses don't last long off the bush though e.g. without purpose.
Too many people go through life drifting from day to day, just DEAD, but their heart is beating. They are like a car with a working stereo/radio reception but no motor/gas. All talk/radio, but no horsepower/action. No purpose/roots. No action/resilience.
They say don't mix personal with business, but I think this is bad advice. Whatever is going on or not going on with you personally will definitely show up as inconsistency and incompetence in business. Get yourself right, and then get your business right.
Some people are slowly dying, even though they are alive in physical form, they are just mentally and emotionally empty, and it shows in their lack of enthusiasm, ethics and urgency during business.
They want instant gratification, and are too afraid to sacrifice material things and the perception of others in order to achieve their goals. They are too afraid of being judged and respond out of fear and emotion to extrinsic bandwagons and/or trends.
Your purpose should come from something inside. So if you ask someone who they are, they would probably give you their first name. This person has not located their purpose. You can find your purpose in many ways.
Sometimes it is a tragic event, a loss or an epiphany. When things go wrong you can find your purpose in this despair as I have. Your purpose will help you maintain resilience. It keeps you focused on your "why" (which never should change) vs. your "how" (which will change many times). Your why is your purpose i.e. the motor and the gas that equates to action. Your how i.e. is that radio/self-talk that equates to resilience. You cannot have resilience without the purpose first. I see too many people in business who lack action, consistency and follow-through.
Purpose is an intangible internal thing by the way. A lot of people say "someone" is their purpose or a "thing" or a "project" is their purpose. No it is not, because those things do not live forever, but spirit does. Purpose is not a noun. It is an adjective concept that describes nouns.
If you understand that death is certain, the only thing that matters is what you do now. Will people remember you and what you stood for? Will they remember that you tried to do everything to help them. To improve the world? To be your best? To give to others?
They say that hell is being on your deathbed and realizing who you are vs. who you could have become. When you get to heaven and God shows you a movie reel of your life, and then he shows you another movie reel of the life you should have lived and you're at a loss for words but again for sorrow.
Finding your purpose is something which should reflect in you emotionally, spiritually, physically, mentally and professionally. I believe if more people were in touch with their purpose the world would be a better place, and people would be more effective in business. Business is unfulfilling and stressful at a grand scale for so many people because they are not in touch with their purpose. So they hop from resolution to resolution year after year, job to job, from romantic partner to partner etc. because they are not grounded. If you hate your job/hate going to work, no longer love your partner, then LEAVE and go find your purpose. The world is a big place geographically, but due to mobilization you can go anywhere, so in reality it's pretty small and mobilization has exacerbated abundance and options.
No life coach, public speaker or anyone can help you find your purpose; must do it on your own. So do some self-reflection and self-introspection and figure it out. Find your purpose and start improving the lives of those you come in touch with, your life and your business.
