I had an opportunity to be part of a panel discussion titled "Building a New Horizon" hosted by Google's Women Techmakers in Bangalore. I was struck by how many of the topics and audience questions mirrored discussions I've had in other forums. This got me thinking: how can we extend these conversations and share these valuable insights with a wider audience? Here is an attempt to write down the key takeaways from the panel discussion, offering guidance specifically for women navigating the tech industry.?
While success in tech industry requires the same core skills for everyone, women often face unique challenges. Here, we'll explore tips on achieving work-life balance, navigating maternity breaks and childcare, and managing the pressure of being a successful professional while fulfilling personal roles.
- Share Your Story: Everyone has a unique story filled with struggles, achievements, and valuable lessons. Sharing these experiences allows others to learn and be inspired. Celebrate successes of other women to build confidence and a sense of possibility.
- Know Yourself: Self-awareness is crucial. Leverage your strengths, compensate for weaknesses, and set clear goals to navigate your career path. Confidence and high self-esteem are key to success.
- The Power of Networking: Build a strong network by connecting with people. This network fosters learning, sharing, and discovering new opportunities. Help others and contribute to your community.
- Advocate for Yourself and Others: Speak up for what you deserve, whether it's a promotion, raise, or new opportunity. Use data to showcase your skills and value. Advocate for others when possible.
- Lifelong Learning: As Marshall Goldsmith's book "What Got You Here Won't Get You There" highlights, continued growth requires a new skillset at each level. Embrace continuous learning from mentors, peers, juniors, online courses, and more.
- Seek Support: Even the strongest women need help. Build a support system and seek assistance when needed to achieve work-life balance and manage women-specific challenges. Leverage organizational policies and discuss flexible work arrangements with colleagues and managers.
- Break Down Mental Barriers: While biases and the "glass ceiling" exist, don't let them limit your professionalism. Challenge these mental barriers and inhibitions to reach your full potential. Believe in equal opportunities and back yourself up with data.
- Hard Work and Determination: Ultimately, there's no substitute for hard work and determination to succeed.
By sharing experiences, building networks, and advocating for themselves and others, women can create a more inclusive and successful future in tech.
