BUILDING A MORE SUSTAINABLE WORLD
A few days ago, I wrote about how the culture of integrity, the inspiring individuals I get to work with, and the positive impact we make, keep me excited to step into the future with GE. Today, as we celebrate Earth Day, I’d like to share more on just some of the ways that the talented, passionate people at GE Gas Power across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA), are helping to decarbonize the power sector to build a world that works better.
Upgrading existing assets
Billions of dollars have been invested in the existing installed base of power generation technologies around the world. These assets often have lifespans of 20-40 years and cannot all be retired immediately. However, upgrade solutions can be implemented to improve the output, efficiency, flexibility, lifespan, and availability of gas turbines, while reducing fuel consumption and environmental impact. For example, GE’s MXL2 solution has increased the total output of two gas turbines at a customer site in the UAE by up to 23 megawatts (MW), using the same amount of fuel. Our Services teams in the regions, led by Steve Miller in Europe, Adel Omrani in the Middle East, and Kenneth Oyakhire in Sub-Saharan Africa, are helping customers explore various solutions, including upgrades, to enhance the performance of their installed base.?????
Bringing record-setting technologies to the world
Our H-class gas turbines have helped deliver two world records for combined cycle efficiency – one each in France and Japan. This translates into fewer carbon emissions per megawatt hour of power generated. Today, GE's HA portfolio is the world's fastest-growing fleet in its class, with more than 130 gas turbines ordered by over 50 customers. The technology has accumulated more than 1.2 million operating hours at over 30 customer sites globally, including several countries across EMEA. It also offers tremendous operational flexibility, with the ability to ramp power output up and down quickly, thus complementing variable renewable sources with firm, on demand capacity, that can support grid stabilization. The technology is an excellent fit for countries such as South Africa, which has a coal-intensive economy but an ambitious target to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Our New Units, Aero, and Projects teams in EMEA, led by Brice Raisin, Midhat Mirabi, and Mohamad Ali, are helping to bring the H-class, aeroderivative solutions, and other advanced technologies to various countries, to support their energy transition.

Leading the deployment of hydrogen and carbon capture and storage (CCS) solutions
Developments in hydrogen and other low carbon fuels, as well as CCS solutions, mean that a dollar invested in gas turbine technology today does not equate to a dollar spent on the same carbon footprint for the life of the asset. Gas turbines can be a part of the journey to net zero carbon and a destination technology, not just a bridging technology. In the UK, we are actively engaged with customers and partners, exploring pathways to lower carbon power, through hydrogen and CCS solutions, to support the government’s 10 point green industrial revolution. We are well-placed to do so, with 100+ GE gas turbines having supported power generation with hydrogen and associated fuels around the world, accumulating over 8 million operating hours. Across EMEA, our teams, led by Chief Technology Officer, Abdurrahman Khalidi, and Decarbonization Leader, Salim Mousallam, are helping customers in various industrial segments such as power generation, oil and gas, and smelters, to explore pathways to achieve their goals for a lower carbon energy future.
I’m proud of our teams whose everyday efforts are helping to shape the future of energy and leading a decade of action. Together, we’re building a more sustainable world for future generations!

2 年Great summary of some of our initiatives to lower the carbon footprint of power generation activities and build a more sustainable planet, Joe Anis! It's exciting, in particular, to see the progress being made on #hydrogen and #CarbonCapture solutions and the appetite for further innovation here. We still have challenges to overcome in scaling up these solutions and making them more economical but I have no doubt that they will play a critical role in our journey to net zero.

2 年Joe, well said. Today, our teams are helping to build power plants to enable the transition away from coal and liquid fuels to cleaner gas power, establishing new facilities with highly efficient gas turbines that can transition to burning hydrogen and other low carbon fuels, and more. Couldn’t be prouder of the GE family leading the energy transition!
