Building a More Diverse Tech Industry: Beyond the Press Releases
This #CelebrateDiversityMonth, let's have a real conversation about fostering inclusion in tech. Since 2013, we've seen a surge in public commitments – CEOs embracing Black Lives Matter, pledges to increase female leadership, and announcements of diversity initiatives. But are these pronouncements enough?
Limited Progress:
The 2017 #MeToo movement brought a shift in workplace culture (on paper, at least). Yet, women in tech still face significant hurdles. Promotions remain elusive, pay gaps persist, and the "bro culture" thrives in many companies.
The Same Old Playbook:
Many companies rely on the same tired tactics: hiring a diversity head, unconscious bias training, and diversity reports. While these steps have been underwhelming, they are a great start. ( HCH Enterprises can help you with that- our colleagues Dr. Maritsa Barros and Sharon M. Ravitch, Ph.D. are amazing leaders in #DEIB training- we LOVE to hear them speak and do their DEIB magic.)
What Needs to Change?
This isn't just about optics. A diverse workforce leads to better innovation, decision-making, and performance.
