Building a Life to Last - One Day at a Time

“...it is better to understand who you are than where you are going—for where you are going will almost certainly change.” ― Jim Collins,?Built to Last?

Dear Friend,

For the longest time, I have been intrigued by the word 'legacy'. Legacy means something that you create and then pass on to the next generation. In an 'heir to the throne' or family-related context, a legacy has a very different connotation. I am talking about building a life, a team, or an organization that becomes a legacy!

Let me share a few examples to make it real for us. Tata Group, an Indian multinational conglomerate founded in 1868 by Jamshedji Tata. Ericsson, a Swedish multinational networking and telecommunications company, founded by Lars Magnus Ericsson in 1876. These are legacies. Isaac Newton (born 1643), Wright Brothers (born in 1867/1871), Marcus Aurelius (born 121 AD) - these are legacies. We still remember their words, their actions and get inspired.?

How can you and I build a legacy? Let's talk about building an individual legacy today.

Disclaimer?- I have personally not built a life or an organization that is a legacy.?YET. We don't know where my life might end up. I feel the same way about yours.

After reading the book?Built to Last , here are my three big ideas that you and I can apply to our own lives, and hopefully, over time, with wisdom and as we age gracefully, our life will be a life that is built to last!

  1. No Tyranny of the 'OR' - embrace the genius of the 'AND' - We are many times stuck in the 'OR' - I can do this or that. I am good at this or that. Let's drop the 'Or' and embrace the 'And'. For instance, I can be good at analytics 'AND' be creative. I can be profitable 'AND' purposeful. Since we at times live with a scarcity mindset, we embrace the Or. Let's shift the mindset to that of abundance and open up the possibilities. Anything is possible!
  2. Preserve the Core - change everything readily, except the core beliefs and values - Those who fully understand authenticity, know the power of an authentic life. When you live authentically, true to your core, true to your values - there is no resistance, no breaks. Just a smooth ride. The bumps feel like part of the journey. You flow through life (but do so intentionally). But when you keep changing your values too often, that is a recipe for disaster. So take a pause, reflect, and define who you are at your core.
  3. Good Enough Never IS Enough - strive to do better tomorrow than you did today - To be in the top 1% of any field, you have to keep working on your art. A few weeks ago, Rafael Nadal won his championship number 21! From two sets down, all prediction models against him, fans disheartened, he did not give up. He knew good enough is never enough. He strived in that moment to become better than who he was. Pursue excellence and keep striving for it.?

As always, leaving you with this question -?What is your legacy??What do you do to bring out your best???Are you taking actions that help you build a life that will last? What can you change now that would lead to a different outcome?

That's it from me then. I would love to know if you were able to derive value from this.?If it did, write back to me. If it did not, then definitely write back to me. I read every message that comes my way.

Warmly,?

Utkarsh

My dear friend, Abha Chalpe Ghosh, Ph.D., and I co-wrote this article last year. What this article intends to do is to shed light on patriarchy in general and provide food for thought to the origin of certain practices and are they still valid today. What this article does not intend to do – to hurt anyone’s sentiments or to prove anyone wrong!

I think for me, I am working on the premise that "Life is simple". Not for a moment I mean that life is easy. But it is not complicated. We, as human beings have taken it upon ourselves to make life as complicated as possible. My goal is to make life simple. Just to give one example. God has given us one mouth and two ears. So, logically we should listen more and speak less. But, most of the humankind does exactly the opposite.
