To meet the Paris Agreement targets and stay within the 1.5-degree target increase in temperature, it is estimated that the world has only 400 gigatons of CO2 left in our carbon budget – less than a decade’s worth at the current rate.
There are some fantastic carbon solution technologies being developed, which will be critical in the transition to a green economy. But these technologies are often being developed by entrepreneurs and startups with little financial support; unfortunately, investments in climate tech continue to drop, while the severity of climate-related disasters increases.
We cannot afford not to support climate tech startups, if we want to solve this existential challenge. That's why UAE Independent Climate Change Accelerators (UICCA) works with startups to help them solve the cross-sector, multi-stakeholder challenges that are difficult to tackle alone.
Earlier this year, we launched the first official cycle of our startup accelerator, the UICCA Launchpad, with a focus on carbon solutions. We welcomed eight startups with incredible potential to build carbon solution technologies that reduce, capture, and measure emissions or provide alternatives to high-emission processes.
Our cohort offered a range of innovative technologies that included carbon capture Capture6 , carbon removal through mineralization Decahydron , AI powered carbon intelligence Zeroe , fugitive emissions mitigation MagDrive Technologies , waste to energy Nantek , Waste-To-En , and hydrogen fuel cell applications Tobias Koch from FCI , Sthyr Energy Private Limited .
During this three-month journey, they have undertaken a programme of mentorship, trainings, networking and workshops that increased their knowledge and understanding of the UAE market and the nuanced climate challenges faced in the region. On behalf of UICCA, I would like to use this opportunity to thank our ecosystem of mentors, contributors, companies and investors who supported this cycle, and I have great confidence that these promising innovations will start coming to life as fully-realised technologies in the close future.

Our next Launchpad cycle will be focused on a topic I am extremely passionate about: the circular economy.
Research has shown that the GCC region alone could save USD 138 billion and curtail emissions by 150 million tonnes of CO2 by adopting a circular economic model. We are very much looking forward to receiving applications from entrepreneurs and startups with ideas that can help the world to reduce waste and emissions and support the pathway to achieving the UAE Circular Economy Policy 2021-2031.
Ecosystems working in harmony are fundamental to the growth and evolution of any society.? We have witnessed this in nature, from micro-communities such as beehives, to the significant role of every plant, tree, animal, and insect in allowing our planet to thrive.
Today, our ecosystem is out of sync, and we are all witnessing the effects.
Alongside effective carbon solutions, transitioning to a more circular economy, where resources are consumed more thoughtfully and recycled more effectively, is part of the pathway to restoring balance and ensuring a sustainable future for our planet.

3 个月5. Biodiversity Support Planting trees and greenery creates habitats for diverse species, improving ecosystem health and resilience. Healthy ecosystems adapt better to climate change impacts, such as floods and heatwaves. 6. Reduction of Energy Use Greenery around buildings reduces the need for air conditioning by providing natural cooling, lowering energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions from power plants. 7. Preventing Desertification Plantation efforts combat desertification by stabilizing soil, reducing land degradation, and promoting sustainable land use. 8. Stormwater Management Trees and vegetation absorb and filter stormwater, reducing runoff and minimizing the impact of floods caused by climate change. 9. Inspiring Sustainable Practices Green spaces encourage communities to adopt eco-friendly practices, such as conservation and renewable energy usage, fostering a collective effort to combat climate change.

3 个月It has great value for the efforts of Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan. Probably Photosynthesis is best natural remedy! Plantation and greenery play a crucial role in mitigating the effects of climate change. Here's how they contribute: 1. Carbon Sequestration Trees and plants absorb carbon dioxide (CO?): Through photosynthesis, vegetation absorbs CO?, the primary greenhouse gas, and stores it as biomass. Forests act as carbon sinks, reducing the amount of CO? in the atmosphere and slowing global warming. 2. Temperature Regulation Cooling effects: Vegetation provides shade and cools the air through transpiration, helping reduce the urban heat island effect in cities. Green spaces moderate local climates, making areas less prone to extreme temperatures. 3. Air Quality Improvement Trees filter pollutants like nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and particulate matter, improving air quality. Better air quality reduces climate-related health issues and enhances ecosystem resilience. 4. Water Cycle Stabilization Forests and vegetation promote water retention and prevent excessive evaporation, reducing the risk of droughts.
