Building an Inclusive Future with Sthembile

This Integrated Public Service Month, Infrastructure News interviewed, Building Control Works Inspector, Sthembile Khanyile at the Department of Infrastructure Development (DID) . Sthembile shared her story of unwavering commitment to uplifting colleagues and fostering an environment of inclusivity and productivity at Team DID.

Sthembile is responsible for overseeing maintenance at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academical Hospital. However, her impact goes beyond her job description, she is a catalyst for positive change and her core belief of fairness leads her to create an equitable workplace for everyone. “One of the strategies that helped enhance my effectiveness is the ability to collaborate harmoniously with my colleagues and my willingness to learn. My experience has taught me that excellence in work is not driven by titles or qualifications, but rather by the ability to work with others and the willingness to learn from everyone, including those in junior roles, she said. Adopting an approach of openness, interaction, and collaboration enhances the learning journey”, she said.

Sthembile believes, “Employees are our main resource – it is crucial for Managers to acknowledge the roles of Employees in ensuring the functionality of the Department. We need to pay attention to all Employees, focusing on developing their skills, enriching their knowledge and instilling self-confidence in those who might be struggling or hesitant to participate. We must actively involve them and show appreciation for their contributions, regardless of how small they may seem. This approach will motivate employees to share ideas and work diligently, as they will feel that their inputs are valued. As a result, the role of Managers will become smoother, as Employees will be driven to deliver better results when they feel valued, motivated, and supported.'"

Sthembile takes pride in being part of Team DID which makes a positive impact on the communities we serve, “The DID plays a significant role in community development, ranging from providing infrastructure services to generating employment opportunities for the youth, women and persons with disabilities. We provide opportunities for SMMEs. This makes me exceptionally proud to serve. Our mission goes beyond infrastructure- the values lived by Team DID will pave the way for future generations to be able to collaborate harmoniously.”
