One of the first steps to take while building the hospital is the Infrastructure safety. Most of the Hospital owers many times forget to incorporate the safety aspect of hospital when planning to make a hospital
Responsibility for the hospital safety is not only to the patients and employees but also for the infrastructure the expensive high-end equipment and of course to the visitors who come to hospitals with their sick family members.
Steps to be taken when planning a hospital
- Along with the blueprint layout always consult an NABH Auditor for reference material for the provision of space:
- Indian Standards (IS 12433) formulated by Bureau of Indian Standards (for 30 to 100 bedded hospitals and other standards.
- IS 10905 for basic requirements for general hospital buildings
2. Portable Water
- IS 10500
- WHO guidelines for drinking water -3 rd Edition
3. Have a Disaster Management Plan
Must incorporate essentials elements of
- alert codes
- information and communication
- action cards for each staff during a disaster
- Availability and earmarking of resources
- establishment of command nucleus
- Training
- Mock drills
4. Hazardous Material
- The hazardous materials could be identified as per part II of manufacture, storage and Import of Hazardous Chemical Amendment Rules 2000
- In addition, biological materials like blood, body fluids and microbiological cultures, mercury nuclear isotopes medical gases LPG gas, steam ETO are all hazardous materials and need different manuals for handling each one separately.
5. Updating drawings of site layout floor plans and fire escape routes
6. A round-the-clock regular maintenance engineering support services and utility system is essential
7. A Biomedical Equipment Management Programme is a good practice.
8. There needs to be a documented plan policy and guidelines for non-fire emergencies.
