Building Growth Mindset for Teachers

Mindset Change for Teachers - In this article, I will discuss how teachers can change their mindsets and start improving their lives.

The teaching profession is difficult.?

I know you’d say all professions are.?

But you’d agree that humans are difficult to deal with. They naturally resist change.

Yet teachers work to cause positive change in humans. And these ages range are yet to understand they're left from right: children and teens.

As a teacher, you’re likely teaching because you find yourself in it. If someone offers you a role in an organization with better pay, you’d likely take the offer. Won’t you?

But you’re in this teaching job, living paycheck to paycheck, piling debts, applying for other jobs, and wondering when your life would take a better turnaround.

Your life is already at the edge of turning around for the better, you just didn’t realize it.?

There are a lot of other things you can merge with teaching. These things will make you stop looking for jobs elsewhere or scared of what your future would be like.?

They are already related to what you’re doing, so easy to plug into.

Don’t let the teaching profession blindfold you.

Looking for a job elsewhere. Being scared of how your future will be. Etc has cornered you into a fixed mindset.

Let’s change that today. Let’s build you a growth mindset.

Hence,?

What is a growth mindset?

According to Harvard Business Review , a publication of the Harvard Business School defined growth mindset this way: To briefly sum up the findings: Individuals who believe their talents can be developed (through hard work, good strategies, and input from others) have a growth mindset. They tend to achieve more than those with a more fixed mindset (those who believe their talents are innate gifts).

What this means is that:

When Mr. Shola, the grade supervisor, complained that your lesson note is not well written. Though he commented without regard, you smiled and said, “okay sir, I’ll go fix it.”

Then you learned, worked harder, and never made such a mistake again.??

Or.

The school authority made you the final year coordinator, the head of the disciplinary committee, yet you have 30 periods to teach in a week.?

Yes. I know it’s much.

But you learned time management, did your best in each office and delivered excellent service.

Without raised pay, you made a great effort and achieved success.

I give it to you, you have a growth mindset.

Other attributes you’re likely to have are:

  • You never stop growing?
  • You always experiment and innovate to do things
  • You ask questions to know better
  • You’re flexible to student’s learning patterns and open to ideas
  • You learn new technology
  • You truly listen
  • And you constantly reflect on things.?

But if you do the opposite of these, you have a fixed mindset, so how do you build a growth mindset?

Start by:

  • Taking responsibility for improving your knowledge, skills, and practice.
  • Seeing setbacks and feedback as an opportunity to learn and grow your skills.
  • Actively seeking learning opportunities and new challenges.
  • Always being positive and of high expectations of your students.
  • Using growth mindset language when teaching and with yourself.

I know these seem like how you can do better and help students alone, what’s in it for you?

I don’t create content that doesn’t benefit teachers. You can always hold me accountable for that.

How you can start using the growth mindset principle to your advantage

  1. Create a Project Around It

The world project may seem like a big deal. It isn’t.

Start by being mindful of growth and fixed mindset activities in your class. Use your students are your research sample. Then create a growth mindset framework that the rest of the school and adopt. You should also write a daily article about it.

For instance, as your student walks into the classroom every day: ask them to recite some growth mindset languages like:” I will score 10/10 in my sums today.” or “I will make sure that I go through every correction done in class today.”

Document the process for one month, then compare your students' progress.?

Create a framework out of this and include it in your CV.

This alone could make you relevant still as an educationist, but in an organization that would likely pay you more and better.

2. Learn a skill using the growth mindset

Teachers don’t have time. I know it. I was there years ago.

But I found time to do many things. Now, I don’t teach. I just present.

Grab the Google UX Design Certificate or take the UX Writing Challenge via email.?

For instance, you can take the course, practice it and get other resources as you go. In three months, without minding what anyone would say, declare yourself an expert in it, i.e a UX Designer or UX Writer.

There are three other things that you can do, but as a teacher, I understand how confusing many options could be to students.

So, take any of these two routes and smile at the bank.

Summary

By assumption, most teachers are supposed to be of a growth mindset. But the situation of the profession has made many grow into money thinkers alone. That’s why you’d see teachers in some schools selling snacks to the students, and others in high-end corruption like examination malpractices.

This should help you live the life you desire.
