Building a Greener Future for the Petrochemical Industry

Building a Greener Future for the Petrochemical Industry

Under the sponsorship of the IEEE Industry Applications Society (IAS), the PCIC Conference has become the premier annual application meeting for practicing electrical engineers. The PCIC conference is noted for the high quality and practical application of its technical papers. The technical program this year will feature 61 papers focusing on the technology and issues faced by electrical engineers in the petroleum, chemical, and mining industries. For over 50 years, petrochemicals have had an important place in our everyday lives as the little-known building blocks of products like plastics, rubbers, fertilizers, and textiles. These common household products are conventionally produced from fossil fuels through an energy-intensive steam-cracking process.

While the sector has evolved to drive efficiency and reduce costs, the focus is now on carbon reduction, which is a daunting task for the third largest carbon-emitting industry. Between 2010 and 2020, the sector's CO2 emissions grew by 41%, even though carbon intensity has stagnated over the last few years. To meet the net zero emissions by 2050 target, the industry’s direct emissions need to decrease by 12% between 2020 and 2030—and then continue to reduce at an even faster rate with future low-carbon technologies.

This year, we are proud to have presented 6 technical papers at the Petroleum and Chemical Industry Committee (PCIC) conference in New Orleans, discussing various topics relating to the large machinery that runs complex systems like CCS.

Members of the Innomotics team discussed technical topics such as motor failure procedures, high-power (>15 MW) VFDs, stator winding insulation systems, adjustable frequency drives, and more. It was a great opportunity to introduce our customers in the petrochemical space to our new brand as Innomotics and re-affirm our commitments to engineering excellence and to supporting our customers and their partners on the road to the future.

The key to making growth sustainable in a carbon-intensive industry like the petrochemical sector is to adopt carbon reduction technologies. At Innomotics, we are paving the road to a greener, more sustainable future through various decarbonization efforts like CCS. Learn more about Innomotics on our website, or check us out on LinkedIn.
