Building a “Giving” Team

As the general manager of Illus Lighting, I truly appreciate the value of teamwork in our fast-paced and demanding work environment. We often have a lot to accomplish with limited resources, time, and energy. In high-performing teams, we cultivate a desire to serve one another and genuinely care about each other's success. Here are three tips I've found effective for fostering a culture of giving within our team.

Inclusive Culture

We all have team members who eagerly share their insights, but some may hesitate to voice their opinions. It's crucial to provide a platform for these individuals to express their unique perspectives. By actively seeking their input with an open mindset, we help them feel valued and encourage their contributions.

Cross-Team Collaboration

I believe in providing opportunities for our team members to learn and grow beyond their defined roles. Every organization has “white space”—areas where important tasks can fall through the cracks. By creating a culture where team members can step in and take initiative, we transform our organization into a highly accountable and unified team. I make it a priority to support my team and recognize their efforts.

Provide Feedback

Constructive feedback is vital. When we receive help, it’s essential to discuss what worked well and what could be improved. By using a supportive tone, we ensure our team members feel their contributions are valued, making them more receptive to new approaches.

When everyone feels included and valued, they take more ownership of their work, leading to exceptional performance. Our team thrives on three elements of reciprocal support: awareness of others' needs, genuine willingness to help, and the courage to accept help in return. This creates an unstoppable team where everyone finds personal and professional satisfaction.
