Building Giants: The Power of Effective Mentorship in Accelerators
As usual, here's a TLDR:
? Effective mentorship requires continuous improvement and adaptability to meet the unique needs of each cohort.
? Feedback is crucial for the growth of both mentors and startups, ensuring impactful and actionable insights.
? Building a supportive community transforms mentors and founders into lifelong collaborators and friends. ??
I’m often asked about mentorship and how I manage mentors, and I was inspired to write this post as a reflection on the past six years of mentoring companies. Having been a mentor at FoundersBoost LA from 2018 to 2020 and serving as the LA Program Director in 2021 and 2022, I’ve had the privilege of working with around 100 companies in total. Since the beginning of 2023, I’ve been the General Manager of The Heritage Group Accelerator , overseeing a cohort of hardtech startups. Throughout these years, I’ve collaborated with a mentor pool of over 100 amazingly talented and dedicated individuals. This post is a tribute to their invaluable contributions and a deep dive into the role of mentorship in accelerators.
My journey into managing accelerators began with a deep-rooted passion for mentorship. There’s an undeniable gravitational pull towards well-run accelerator programs, characterized by engaged leadership and a community of driven entrepreneurs. When I was offered the role of Program Director at Founders Boost LA, I seized the opportunity. I had the privilege of working alongside an incredible co-director who facilitated my transition, making the experience both rewarding and enlightening. This experience taught me that effective mentorship is not about finding a secret sauce and locking it in. Every cohort is different, every mentor and combination of mentors brings a unique dynamic, and each cohort develops its own culture. Continuous improvement and adaptability are crucial to managing these evolving ecosystems.

Accelerators are not static entities; they are dynamic, ever-evolving ecosystems. Each cohort brings a unique culture, and the key to effective mentorship lies in continuously adapting and improving the program to meet the needs of this living organism. This requires a constant flow of feedback and a keen understanding of the cohort’s nuances. As Adam Grant aptly puts it, “The best leaders are constantly learning and unlearning,” and this philosophy is crucial in managing accelerator programs. Feedback is the lifeblood of any successful mentorship program. It is essential to standardize and regularize feedback, ensuring that both mentors and mentees have a voice. Confidential feedback mechanisms allow for honest assessments and provide invaluable insights into the growth of startups and the development of mentors. Great mentors aren’t born; they are made through continuous learning and experience. As Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn, notes, “The most impactful feedback is one that can be acted upon.” ??
Creating a sense of community within accelerators is pivotal. It’s about cultivating an environment where mentors support founders, founders support each other, and the accelerator staff supports everyone. This interconnected web of relationships transforms a group of strangers into a cohesive unit of lifelong friends, colleagues, and collaborators. It’s about fostering a culture where everyone feels valued and invested in each other’s success. One of the most rewarding aspects of managing accelerators is witnessing the tangible impact of mentorship. For instance, at Founders Boost LA, I mentored a startup in the entertainment space that was being acquired by a larger company. Leveraging some recent M&A experience, I guided the founder through complex negotiations, equipping him with the knowledge to make informed decisions in addition to make sure he was put in front of the right experts to assist. Such interactions highlight the profound influence mentors can have on the trajectory of startups.
Similarly, at The Heritage Group Accelerator, mentors play a critical role in driving startups towards commercialization. Whether it’s facilitating commercial pilots or providing strategic guidance, the expertise and connections offered by mentors are invaluable. These success stories underscore the importance of having a diverse and dedicated mentor pool that can offer a wide range of insights and support. Matching mentors with startups is both an art and a science. It requires a deep understanding of each mentor’s expertise and each startup’s needs. The goal is to create synergies where mentors and startups can collaborate effectively. This often involves pairing generalists with specialists to cover a broad spectrum of knowledge and skills. For example, in the hard tech space, matching a specialty chemical startup with mentors who have experience in manufacturing, business development, and technical aspects ensures comprehensive support. ??
Maintaining regular and meaningful communication between mentors and mentees is essential. It’s about setting realistic expectations and fostering open lines of communication. Regular check-ins, whether through formal meetings or informal catch-ups, help build trust and ensure that both parties are aligned. Confidential surveys and feedback sessions also play a crucial role in evaluating and improving the mentorship experience. Mentorship within accelerators is a powerful catalyst for growth and leadership. By continuously adapting programs, valuing feedback, fostering community, and strategically matching mentors with startups, accelerators can create environments where innovation thrives.
As entrepreneurs, investors, and mentors, we have a collective responsibility to nurture these ecosystems. It is my goal to help as many people as possible within the ecosystem to embrace the power of mentorship, support one another, and drive the next wave of innovation. To all the incredible mentors I’ve had the honor of working with, thank you for your dedication and invaluable contributions.
