Building the Future: How Procom Group Supports Apprenticeships in Construction
The construction industry faces ongoing skills shortages, making apprenticeships more important than ever in developing the next generation of professionals. At Procom Group, we are committed to nurturing young talent, providing hands-on experience, and equipping apprentices with the skills they need to succeed.
Currently, we have two apprentices, Taylor Hardiman and Henry Allan , training to become Quantity Surveyors. Their journey with Procom Group reflects our dedication to fostering new talent and ensuring the industry continues to thrive. In this article, we explore their experiences, aspirations, and why they believe apprenticeships are the ideal pathway into construction.
Why Apprenticeships Matter
Apprenticeships offer a unique blend of practical work experience and formal education, allowing individuals to earn while they learn. For industries like construction, where real-world skills are essential, apprenticeships bridge the gap between academic learning and professional expertise.
At Procom Group, we believe that investing in apprentices is not only beneficial for the individuals but also for the future of the industry. By providing mentorship, training, and exposure to real projects, we are helping to cultivate skilled professionals who can contribute meaningfully to the sector.
Meet Our Apprentices: Their Journey So Far
We sat down with our two apprentices Taylor & Henry to learn more about their experiences at Procom Group, their career aspirations, and their thoughts on apprenticeships in construction.
Interview with Our Apprentices Taylor & Henry:
1. Why did you choose an apprenticeship in Quantity Surveying?
Henry: I have always been interested in the construction, but I wanted to gain practical experience whilst studying. Having a family member who is a charted QS directed me into going for an apprenticeship in Quantity Surveying. This allowed me to gain an interest and passion for the work QS’s do daily, develop hands on skills, earn while I learn and gain a qualification without student debt.
2. What attracted you to Procom Group as an employer?
Henry: Procom Group stood out to me because of the opportunities I would get to experience for my career growth, the companies commitment to high-quality projects and personal development that is given to apprentices has made it the perfect place to start my career, and if I could say anything to myself a year ago when I joined, I would have to say “You made the right choice!”
3. Can you describe a typical day in your role?
Henry: A typical day as an Apprentice Quantity Surveyor at Procom Group, consists of assisting with measurements, reviewing project costs, and working with Senior Quantity Surveyors & Commercial Managers to manage contracts and procurement. I also spend time on-site, gaining knowledge from project teams and trades who are there full time.
4. What skills and knowledge have you gained since starting?
Henry: I have developed stronger numerical and analytical skills, improved my ability to read construction drawings and gained a deeper understanding of what cost management is like in the construction industry. I would also say since working in the construction industry my social skills have improved through working with clients or contractors.
5. How has Procom Group supported your learning and career development?

Taylor: Procom has helped my learning and career development by giving me multiple opportunities to have very different experiences that most apprentices would receive. I am giving the chance to be client facing which I believe can and has really helped my development. Larger construction company apprentices might not be given the same chance and responsibility that Henry and I are given at Procom Group. I feel this has helped our development massively. We really get a feel for the true construction industry.
6. What has been your biggest challenge so far, and how did you overcome it?
Henry: One of my biggest challenges I have faced was understanding the complexity of taking off from a construction drawing. I overcame this by asking questions and studying what the Senior Quantity Surveyor & Commercial Managers recommend me to me, which I then applied to real situations with the support of my mentors.
7. Where do you see yourself in five years?
Taylor: Fully qualified and holding a position of Quantity Surveyor at Procom Group. I also see myself helping Key Task on multiple projects. Alongside my Quantity Surveying position I hope to still be working alongside Procom Inspect with various roles too.
8. Would you recommend apprenticeships to others? If so, why?
Taylor: I would 100% recommend apprenticeships to people from the age of 16-25. They offer a great balance of work experience and learning. They also offer you the opportunity to earn money while you learn which is always welcomed!
9. What advice would you give to someone considering a career in Quantity Surveying?
Taylor: Do it. It is a great chance to get into a very detail orientated side of construction.
Henry: Be proactive, ask questions, and take every opportunity to learn. Quantity surveying is a rewarding career with great prospects, but it requires attention to detail, strong communication skills, and a willingness to continuously develop your knowledge.
10. How do you think apprenticeships benefit the construction industry as a whole?
Taylor: They are a great benefit to the industry that sometimes struggle to find educated employee’s. Apprenticeships provide a great opportunity to develop the industry and its growth.
Henry: Apprenticeships help bridge the skills gap by providing practical, on-the-job training for future professionals. They ensure that young people gain real industry experience, which strengthens the workforce and contributes to the long-term success of the construction sector.
The Impact of Apprenticeships on the Industry
With an aging workforce and increasing demand for skilled professionals, apprenticeships are a crucial solution to the construction industry's labour shortages. By training the next generation, companies like Procom ensure the industry remains strong, innovative, and sustainable.
We are proud to be part of this initiative and will continue to support and mentor young professionals as they build their careers in construction.
