Building the Future – Addressing the Talent and Skills Challenge

There are not many sectors that have a bigger impact on people than the built environment, where people live, work and play. ?With that comes social impact responsibility and the need to design and build infrastructure and environments that cater for all people who use them. At the same time, the built environment is significantly responsible for climate change with massive impacts on carbon emissions, biodiversity loss, air and water pollution, energy usage, waste and resources.??

For example, buildings are responsible for 39% of all global carbon emissions, contributing 76% of carbon emissions in London alone. The built environment is therefore both critical and inherently responsible for building better. We need to work collaboratively – utilising the ideas, skills and perspectives of a range of people – to achieve that goal.

We face incredible opportunities for collaborative change – opportunities to build a capable workforce that can meet climate challenges now and into the future, along with workplaces where people want to work and are supported to reach their full potential. That is why I’m committed to supporting businesses to address workplace culture challenges and build inclusive and respectful environments – essential to addressing the talent and skills challenge we face.
