Building Friendships as a Parent: A Journey of Flexibility and Openness

I recently chatted with my good friend Victoria, whom I met through our local SMC group here in DC. Our conversation took me back to how our friendship began in a way that highlights the power of putting yourself out there and embracing flexibility.

A Pandemic Beach Day & An Unexpected Connection

It was March 2020, right as COVID hit. With my kids at home from school and working from home myself, I was desperate to get them some fresh air and playtime with other kids. In a moment of inspiration, I posted in a local parents' group about taking my kids to a beach. Victoria responded, and that's how it all started!

We barely knew each other—two moms with young kids meeting at a beach with social distancing in place. But as we talked, our connection grew. We realized we had a lot in common, and by the end of the day, a genuine friendship had begun.

Friendship that Evolves

Our friendship hasn't been all sunshine and sandcastles. Life throws curveballs, and ours came in the form of Victoria's surgery. The trip we'd planned together fell right on the day she was supposed to be released from the hospital. While I offered to push it back, Victoria, ever the trooper (and with amazing support from her family!), decided the show must go on.

Except... she wouldn't be joining us. Instead, her parents stepped in, and our families vacationed together! It was an unexpected twist that ended up strengthening our bond and expanding our "village."

The Importance of Flexibility and Openness

Victoria and I are living proof that strong friendships can form in unexpected places, even as adults with busy lives. The key is to be open to new connections, embrace flexibility when plans change, and value the support of a strong community.
