Building the Foundation for Success

Building the Foundation for Success

As the countdown to the 2024 Olympics begins, I find myself reflecting on the remarkable journey that has led my daughter, Ariarne, to the pinnacle of athletic achievement. In doing so and as I think about my own journey in Executive Search, I can't help but draw parallels between her preparation for the Games and the meticulous groundwork required when pursuing one's dream role.

Eight years ago, when Ariarne, then 15, began showing promising signs of one day representing Australia, my husband and I faced a pivotal decision. We were informed that for her to have the best chance at success, she needed to leave Tasmania and relocate to Brisbane. We had a life in Tassie with our family, friendships, and careers, but we recognised her determination and knew it was a risk worth taking.

Ariarne has always been a talented swimmer. But success is not merely handed to you on a silver platter. It's earned through dedication, self-belief, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. From a young age, Ariarne exhibited these traits, tirelessly working towards her goal of reaching her full potential. This meant sacrificing typical teenage experiences and committing countless hours to training in the pool, gym, and physiotherapy sessions.

It’s this preparation phase where the foundation for success is laid. Just as Ariarne spends extensive hours in training, candidates must invest time and effort into preparing for their dream job interview. It's about more than just polishing your resume or fine-tuning your interview skills; it's about cultivating a mindset of determination and resilience. Ariarne didn't become an Olympic champion overnight, and similarly, developing in your career requires patience, perseverance, and a willingness to put in the hard yards.

In both realms, sacrifice is inevitable. But it's the choices we make and the values we uphold that define our journey. Ariarne’s pursuit of Olympic gold has demanded sacrifices from our entire family, yet it has also been a source of immense pride and joy. Similarly, in the world of executive recruitment, candidates must be willing to make sacrifices and demonstrate their dedication to the success they aspire to.

As you navigate the paths of success, remember to celebrate your achievements, reflect on the journey, and embrace what you've learned throughout the process.

What an interesting parallel Robyn. The amount of hard work a sportsperson like Ariarne puts in is not an easy journey and it’s a good reminder for those just starting out in their career that it’s a long game. And those who are further through their career that you need to maintain energy and focus and somehow find the same focus you had earlier in your career. I enjoyed the comparison.
