Building Empathy

Building empathy and understanding with the team and peers is critical to your success as a creative leader.
The dictionary defines empathy as “the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.” While empathy is a trait all new leaders need (see this HBR article), without understanding individual team members you are only half effective in your role.
You need to know the temperaments of those on your team. The definition of temperament is “a person's nature, especially as it permanently affects their behavior.”
This is where the magic happens. Knowing the temperaments of the team allows you to know them well, to communicate with them better, to place them properly in regard to projects, to motivate them, and to meet their needs.
The difference between a mediocre leader and an amazing leader is building both empathy and understanding.
