BUILDING EARTHQUAKE-RESILIENT CITIES: PREPARING FOR THE UNFORESEEN

Earthquakes can have devastating effects on cities and their inhabitants. The risk of an earthquake is especially high in areas along fault lines, such as the Himalayan region and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. However, even cities not located in earthquake-prone areas can be affected. Therefore, as architects and planners, we must?prioritise development in synergy with earthquake-resistant building codes?and work in partnership with policymakers and?disaster risk managers?to develop?emergency response plans. This would help?minimise the impact of earthquakes on cities and their inhabitants, thereby building?earthquake-resilient cities.
