Recap: Chargeway and Smartcar discuss driver-centric EV charging experiences
Matt Teske , CEO and founder of Chargeway , joined Smartcar’s Andrews Simon and Matt A. for a discussion on how EV charging networks can use connected car data to scale customer acquisition and retention — all while driving down developer investment for testing and implementing EV integrations.
What did we talk about??
?? About 70% of stations in the US are underutilized, making it difficult for operators to cover infrastructure costs and offer a consistently reliable service.
?? Malfunctioning payment systems, poor network connectivity, and incompatible integrations with credit card systems result in failed charging attempts nearly 20% of the time in the US.
?? How Chargeway uses Smartcar to retrieve EV data like battery level and charging status, which helps the app map the right charging opportunity to a driver based on where they physically are.

How to enable EV plug-and-charge payment with Smartcar
How do you use the Smartcar API to build an EV charging app powered by charger-agnostic billing? Here’s a quick overview of what you need ????
What Smartcar endpoints do you need??
?? To determine an EV’s rated capacity in kWh: GET /battery/capacity
?? To get an EV’s state of charge at the start and end of each charging session: GET /battery
?? To determine if an EV is plugged in and actively charging: GET /charge
?
How do you determine the volume of kWh added during a charging session to bill drivers based on energy consumption??
You’ll calculate the difference between the initial and final SoC percentage value:?
?? Total volume of kWh added during the charging session =? Rated Capacity (kWh) x (Final State of Charge % - Initial State of Charge %)

The missing piece in the connected car era — consent management
Consumers see the value of connected car data and are open to sharing it when it’s aligned with how they want to use that data.
In our 2023 State of Connected Car Apps report , 57% of respondents said they wanted automakers to collaborate with external developers and solution providers to build new software services. In fact, 51% said they would even switch to a new vehicle brand if it would give them access to a bigger ecosystem of mobility apps and services.?
This shows us a demand for connected car solutions, but more importantly, the desire drivers have to choose the value they want to get out of their vehicle data.?
At Smartcar, we believe that drivers must be at the center of solutions designed around connected cars.?
This is why it’s crucial for connected car solutions to implement a secure consent management system that requires drivers to provide explicit permissions before sharing their data for any purpose. It also means drivers must be able to see what data they’re sharing, what service or application has access to their data, and how their data will be used.?

What’s new with Smartcar this month?
??? Smartcar's Flutter SDK is now available?
Developers can use the Flutter SDK to easily integrate Smartcar Connect into a mobile application. How does this make your life easier? You won't need separate developer resrouces for iOS and Android — and you also won't need to build the Connect flow handling yourself!
?? A cleaner look for the Developer Dashboard
We gave our dashboard navigation an upgrade to simplify how developers on Smartcar switch between teams and applications. This update gives you a more visible path to see all the teams you’ve joined and the applications you’re developing.
Take this as your cue to build new passion projects with our developer account — and don’t forget to tell us all about them!
?? Tesla brand-specific endpoints
?? Expanded EV endpoints for Audi
The following EV endpoints are now available for Audi — Get/Set Charge Limit, Start/Stop Charge, and Lock Status!?
We’ve also released a new brand-specific endpoint for Audi, the Charge endpoint, that provides richer access to EV data such as the estimated charge completion time, wattage, charging rate, and more. Energy retailers, DERMS providers, and virtual power plants can use this endpoint to gain visibility into a vehicle’s impact on the grid and optimize charging start times around peak hours.
?? Visit the Smartcar changelog to catch up on all recent platform updates!
That's all for this month!
