Building Deep Connections

“Indicating that shared attitudes and values are critical for building trust and mutual understanding in mentoring relationships.”

In her article, All you need is “deep level” similarity Dr. Jean Rhodes discusses how mentors and mentees can have a better and more connected relationship. Last week, we briefly touched on helping our mentees find their purpose.

Conducting an inventory of our passions and principles helps us identify our purpose, a lofty statement more like an organization’s vision statement. What intersects amongst these three items is our next big thing—what we are being called to do. Dr. (LTC) Chaveso Cook, Ph.D. , likes to say that if we listen and be still, we can feel the universe tugging us in the direction we need to go.

What do these two thoughts have to do with each other? Suppose we work on ourselves enough to do the self-assessment. In that case, we can find a mentoring partner to spark with us, allowing us to go deeper into the relationship and become more professionally and personally successful.

Essentially, aligning your principles, passions, and purpose with those of your mentoring partner is like Woody lighting the rocket strapped to Buzz Lightyear – you can go further and achieve more together.

As we go throughout our day or week, here are some questions to reflect on:

Conduct your passion, principles, and purpose exercise from last week and share what you learned!

Find a quiet place to journal and listen to where the universe is tugging at you. Are you moving in that direction? Share if you are and where you’re going, or if not, what you plan to do to readjust!

Do you spark with your mentoring partner? What made the alignment so easy?
